About the Book

A story based on the British Miners' Strike during 1984/85. The novel focuses mainly on the tensions between the miners on strike and those who wished to carry on working at the mine.

Review :
Mae nofel Alun Gibbard, Talcen Caled, yn ddarlun grymus a chignoeth o fisoedd olaf 1984 a streic fawr y glowyr. Yn ganolog iddi mae storir gyrrwr tacsi, David Wilkie, a gafodd ei ladd gan ddarn o goncrit a daflwyd oddi ar bont uwchlawr ffordd o Rymni i lofa Merthyr Vale. Roedd Wilkie (Steve yn y nofel) yn cludo glwr oedd yn torrir streic sgab ir gwaith. Gwelir y streic yng ngwewyr ei dyddiau olaf, a phortreadir dicter y gwrthdaro rhwng y streicwyr ar rheini oedd am ddychwelyd ir gwaith, ac effaith y digwyddiadau ar deulur dyn tacsi ac ar y cymunedau glofaol. Cyflwynir hyn oll yn bennaf o safbwynt teulur dyn tacsi ac, yn arbennig o effeithiol, drwy lygaid Dylan, y newyddiadurwr. Yn bur amlwg, pwysodd Alun Gibbard yn drwm ar ei brofiadau personol ei hun or cyfnod, a thebyg mai ef ei hun, i raddau, yw Dylan. Trwy ei lygad ef y cawn rai o ddisgrifiadau grymusaf a mwyaf trawiadol y nofel, y streiciwr gyda chopi or Sun yn ei boced yn ymosod arno, y bws yn gyrru drwyr llinell biced cyn toriad gwawr ... maer nofel yn llawn gemau disgrifiadol delynegol gan sgrifennwr profiadol, dawnus. Maer Gymraeg dafodieithol gyfoethog yn ardderchog. Y gwrthdaro rhwng glowyr ar streic ar rhai syn dychwelyd ir gwaith, ar tyndra ar caledi o fewn y gymuned yw themu dirdynnol y nofel. Mae gan yr awdur gydymdeimlad cytbwys 'r ddwy ochr does yma ddim arthio na phregethu, ac maen nofel drugarog. Ac er bod Merthyr, Merthyr Vale a Chaerdydd yn ganolog i'r stori, maer profiadau ar digwyddiadaun cwmpasu holl faes glo'r de. Un gwyn sy gen i. Fm i erioed yn hoff or arfer o newid enwau cymeriadau hawdd eu hadnabod mewn ffuglen hanesyddol, au cymysgu chymeriadau dychmygol. Maen dechneg a ddatblygwyd gan rai nofelwyr Americanaidd yn y chwedegau. Lle maer nofelydd yn trin pwnc nad yw o dragwyddol bwys, gellir ei dderbyn. Ond mae cefnlen Talcen Caled o bwys, goelia i, ac nid ywr haneswyr wedi llwyr wyntyllu holl agweddau cyfnod y streic. Mae Alun Gibbard yn taflu gwybodaeth ac argraffiadau gwir ddiddorol a phwysig ir pair, ond ai'r nofel, felly, ywr cyfrwng gorau o gyflwyno hyn, a ninnau'n dal yn agos iawn at y streic ei hun, ei chreithiau a'i chanlyniadau? Gobeithio y bydd darllen a thrafod pellach ar y nofel hon. Gwyn Griffiths Gellir defnyddio'r adolygiad hwn at bwrpas hybu, ond gofynnir i chi gynnwys y gydnabyddiaeth ganlynol: Adolygiad oddi ar www.gwales.com, trwy ganiatd Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru.
