About the Book

A novel set on the Gower peninsula, south Wales in the 1980s. It explores obsession, mysticism, loyalty and faith.

Review :
Now here is a novel that will set the reader thinking is Peter Griffiths giving an account of a womans treacherous ride through mental illness or telling a tale of fantasy and mystique? The story starts on 20 July in the south-west corner of the Gower peninsula, where Peggy Harris has just given birth to a daughter Annie. Mrs. Maggie Williams, Peggys sister-in-law and an experienced midwife, has delivered the baby, a rarity in that Peggy is already forty years old and the child is delivered at home. A bond between Annie and her Auntie Maggie grows from that moment and later, when Annies life becomes increasingly turbulent, it is Maggie who takes control. Annie gives all the appearance of being a happy child. It is not until early adolescence that she begins to suffer from uncontrollable anxiety, even about insignificant matters. She feels at a loss. Annie is not a weak character, and with determination she seemingly manages to break the cycle of anxiety and depression which has inhibited her happiness. When she meets Dylan she feels herself totally cured of the unwelcome thoughts that had entered her head. Unfortunately, though she is happily married with two young children, circumstances begin to destabilise her moderately tranquil existence and her mind. Annie finds sanctuary at Llangenydd church, and it is here that she becomes acquainted with the spirit of St. Cenydd. She now believes that her purpose above all other is to serve St. Cenydd, and she becomes obsessed with a young surfer with cropped shiny blond hair, whom she passes on her walks along the cliff top to Llangenydd church. Peter Griffiths gives the reader a great feeling of place. The Gower peninsula is a part of the country he cherishes and knows well. The Mystical Milestone would make an excellent choice for a library group or readers circle. Much food for thought and discussion.
