About the Book

This book tells the story of Welshman Howard Marks who has recently discovered his true Welsh identity after a notorious few decades. Raised in Kenfig Hill, south Wales, he became one of the most prolific drug smugglers in the world.

Review :
Alun Gibbard became involved in the writing of Two Dragons following a conversation in a Laugharne pub; he and Howard Marks had previously met while filming for the Welsh TV channel S4C. Markss life had already become well known after the release of the hit film Mr Nice starring Rhys Ifans. In the first part of Two Dragons we skim over much of what is already known about Howard Marks, and are told about the filming of Mr Nice and the problems regarding the location. It had been hoped that filming could take place in the area where he had been born (Heol Waunbant, Kenfig Hill and the south Wales valleys) but this proved impossible for various reasons. Going back to earlier years, Marks writes of his period studying nuclear physics at Balliol College Oxford, and his short-lived marriage to a Latvian, Ilze Kadegis: to this day I have no idea why we took this extraordinary step. Bored with teaching, and with thanks to an uncle on Glamorgan County Council, he obtained the Thomas and Elizabeth Williams scholarship to return to Oxford to read history and the philosophy of science. Wales had come to my rescue, but I bit the hand that fed me by abandoning my studies and deciding to pursue the career of a drug smuggler. For a time he turned his back on his Welsh heritage. It had, however, proved useful to him in setting up a business exporting Welsh water, which gave him a legitimate reason to visit Bangkok, Karachi and Hong Kong. It was on such a business trip that he was stopped at passport control for what he supposed at the time to be routine questioning. In fact it was the start of a lengthy investigation by Her Majestys Customs & Excise. Chance meetings on his travels and his plausible manner gave Marks the opportunity continuously to add to both his illegal and commercial empires. With Customs & Excise at his heels he took up residence in Mallorca. Four years later he was to be extradited to America. Whilst incarcerated in the United States, he met a black gangster from Chicago who told him more about Wales than he had ever known before. Once back in the United Kingdom, Marks went home to Wales, with a burning desire to know more about his roots and inspired by the belief that his ancestors included William Owen, thought to be the greatest ever Welsh smuggler, Billy the Kid and Henry Morgan, one-time leader of the Brethren of the Coast, one of the most powerful criminal organisations ever. This led Marks to Jamaicas north-east coast where, full of expectation, he found himself disenchanted and wanting to return to Wales. Celebrity names are bandied about throughout the book, and Marks has certainly met many contrasting characters and fortunes. Its effortless reading.
