About the Book

At the crossroads of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish faiths, a priceless artifact is stolen from a vault hidden beneath Jerusalem's Temple Mount. With high stakes on sacred ground, time is running out . . .  The violent theft leaves thirteen Israeli soldiers and policemen dead, the Palestinians up in arms over the desecration of sacred grounds, and the tension between the two groups dangerously high. Jerusalem is a stick of dynamite and the fuse has been lit . . . Meanwhile, in Vatican city, American scientist Charlotte Hennesey and Italian anthropologist Giovanni Bersei have been secretly summoned to analyse a mysterious artefact: the bones of a two-thousand-year-old unidentified, crucified man. Charlotte starts to wonder – could these be the bones of Jesus Christ? With the malevolent eye of Vatican security expert Salvatore Conte watching her every move, Charlotte must work against the clock. She knows that if the mortal remains of Christ are indeed in the burial box, there is a question to face: will the Vatican allow this information – and Charlotte – to see the light of day . . . Fast-paced and intelligent, blending historical fact with persuasive fiction, The Sacred Bones is an addictively compelling thriller, perfect for fans of Dan Brown. Following a conspiracy stretching back to the days of the Templar Knights to the shifting alliances of contemporary Middle Eastern politics, The Sacred Bones calls into question many of modern religion's most deeply-held beliefs.

Review :
'Michael Byrnes has used the tangled skein of religious fervour to produce a pacey page turner of a novel. His story plunges the reader into a murky world of international subterfuge, leading to mind bending revelations and murder forged in centuries of bloody history. THE SACRED BONES has the intensity of the best novels of its type, and Byrnes has managed to produce a plot with as many twists and turns as the Italian catacombs of its climax. This intelligent and expertly written book has provided me with an as exciting a read as I have had in many years.' LLOYD CLARK, Author of THE FRICTION OF WAR - ITALY & THE BATTLE FOR ROME 1944 'At last, here comes a worthy competitor to Dan Brown and THE DA VINCI CODE. American insurance brokerage CEO Mike Byrnes has pulled off a terrific thriller melding biblical puzzles with modern-day archaeology and the immense knowledge that can be gleaned by forensic science. Action-driven from the start, the plot opens with the theft, by gun-blazing mercenaries, of an ancient relic hidden beneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. One amazing discovery after another emerges from the scientists unwittingly engaged to analyse the crucified skeleton, with repercussions encompassing the Christian, Jewish and Moslem religions. S & S claims intense auctions across the globe for this thriller and the book is worth it for shedding exciting fictional light on ancient mysteries' PUBLISHING NEWS, 'Date With Eight' 17 Nov 06 'THE SACRED BONES will inevitably suffer comparisons with THE DA VINCI CODE, but there is still plenty of room available for a conspiracy thriller in the same mould. This book centres on the discovery of a 2,000-year-old skeleton that bears the marks of crucifixion. From Jerusalem to the Vatican, there is a breathless race through real historical fact laced generously with artistic licence. I found this an immensely enjoyable read' KATE BRADLEY, Head of Fiction BCA (in BOOKSELLER, March Bookseller's Choice) 8 Dec 06 'A new author and a Simon & Schuster spring lead - a cracking conspiracy thriller concerning the hidden tomb of a major historical religious figure. Jerusalem is the clue here, and the ramifications of the find lead to a major attempt at cover-up involving the members of the catholic church, who definitely don't want the true story to get out' SUE BAKER )in PUBLISHING NEWS Personal Choice) 10 Nov 06 'This is terrific stuff according to my reader, controversial and historically enthralling with bags of contemporary action. First rate' Sarah Broadhurst, Bookseller "the book asks some very interesting questions, as each character is forced to make a decision. Would finding proof that the bible was inaccurate destroy their beliefs or strengthen their faith? And is keeping a fragile peace in the holy land more important than making such discoveries public? Would the validity of the catholic faith be questioned if they had to admit embellishments were made to the gospels? It's a strength of the book that it manages to touch on such weighty topics without getting bogged down by them, putting together a fast thriller that doesn't resort to cheap tricks or pandering." (James Stringer, Aberdeen Asset)
