About the Book

This is the story of a love triangle: between an ageing and apparently repulsive priest; his beautiful young wife; and her lover, a doctor who will stop at nothing - perhaps even murder - to have her. There are always three ways of telling this kind of story, and here we get inside the mind of Gregorius, the troubled priest and the difficult husband, who is also a man only gradually beginning to understand himself during the course of what could be his last and fateful summer. In his brilliant re-imagining of the love affair first described in the great Swedish classic, Doctor Glas, Bengt Ohlsson has created a compelling study of loneliness, longing and the nature of love; the desires that bring people together and the fears that keep them apart.

About the Author :
Bengt Ohlsson is one of Sweden's most celebrated novelists. He also writes plays and a weekly column for a Swedish national newspaper. He lives in Stockholm.

Review :
Gregorius... presents in patient detail and with vivid tableaux of contrasting couples, a problem that then exercised many. Ohlsson movingly depicts the plight of a man aware he is physically abhorrent to the woman he loves. The power of the book comes from the difficulty of giving tenderness and humanity to [Gregorius's] perspective... Ohlsson is not content to be categorized as a successor. He has his own ambition and formal mastery. Silvester Mazzarella's translation succeeds in capturing the power of this unusual book, one that will be widely discussed. Gregorius is a full, touching and artful re-imagining of its ungainly hero. It's also an unsettling but thoroughly engaging exploration of the seedier sides of human nature, and of the power men and women wield over each other in their most intimate relationships. No wonder it won a prize. Deftly plotted, movingly observed, this fictional act of redemption turns the tables on a classic, as the scapegoat buttonholes us in a seducer's voice. Gregorius is one of the most ambitious books I have read this year. What first appears to be an attempt at salvation for the brute number one in Swedish literature, develops into something much grander.
