About the Book

Set against the background of glitzy West End London, this is a shocking tale of rape and the darker side of city living - but it is told with surprising warmth and humour. Ultimately, this thriller is a story of courage and a struggle to regain self-confidence. "The Rough and The Smooth" is the story of Suzi, an East-End girl who decides to better herself. She leaves her job as a market trader and, at the same time, leaves her abusive father who has recently remarried. Suzi heads for the glamorous West End of London. She is offered a job in a Covent Garden boutique, and moves in with the aristocratic Vanessa who has a flat in Cadogan Square. The book brims over with the glitz and glamour of the London fashion scene. The story takes us to the familiar haunts of the rich and famous - dining at Lorenzo's, Ladies' Day at Ascot, the Wimbledon finals. Suzi's life is now a social whirl of weekend house parties, dinner parties, girl's nights in, love affairs and fashion shows. But this warm and amusing novel has a dark and sinister centre. Suzi has just been offered a great new job and she is all set to get a flat of her own when she is brutally attacked and raped. The police draw a blank in their attempts to find the rapist but he begins to follow Suzi again and torment her with letters and phone calls. Readers are drawn in, trying, with Suzy, to discover, which of the characters her attacker might be.

About the Author :
Mo Barker was born in Wokingham, Berkshire in 1944. After studying beauty and working in fashionable London salons, Mo spent two years in Canada. She returned to London in 1970 and worked in the glamorous world of hairdressing, alongside John Frieda and Nicky Clark, where her clientele included the rich and famous, from actors to notorious crooks. In 1996, Mo decided to bow out of the world of London glamour for a while. She sold everything and spent the next couple of years traveling the world. When she returned to London she decided to write her first book. The Rough and The Smooth is the result.
