About the Author :
Paul, best selling author and independent trainer with over 27 years experience, supports schools in raising achievement by focusing on teaching and learning.Previously a Head of Department in inner Birmingham, an advisory teacher and a Staff Development Tutor, he has worked in over 3000 secondary, primary and special schools in the UK and overseas. Much of Paul's time is spent in classrooms, working directly with teachers and students, devising and trialling strategies to improve the quality of learning for all. His style combines theory and practice. With Dr Donna Brandes, Paul wrote A Guide to Student-Centred Learning (1986) and The Student-Centred School (1990). He edited Learner-Managed Learning (1992) and contributed to Ready for Revision (1998), a practical resource for GCSE study skills. Paul has been an Associate Tutor of the Education Development Unit of the University of Cumbria and an Associate Director of 'Personalised Education Now' (an educational research and publishing company). For five years he edited the quarterly Education Now News and Review.Paul likes to undertake long-term projects; examples include Villiers High School, Southall (10 years), Hagley High School (2 years), Matthew Moss High School, Rochdale (4 years), Robert Blake Science College, Bridgwater (3 years), Dubai English Speaking School and College (2 years), the New International School of Thailand (2years). Also, he regularly leads whole-school training days, provides consultancy, runs courses and addresses conferences, for example Wirral Primary Headteachers, National Breakthrough Boys' Achievement Project, NW of England Primary Advisers, Inclusion in Scotland, Stoke-on-Trent NQTs, St Helens Governors, Trafford Primary Headteachers, NW of England Advanced Skills Teachers, Derby Gifted and Talented Co-ordinators, Nottinghamshire PE Teachers, Worcestershire Secondary Heads, Sefton Advisory Service and Derby City Headteachers, Sheffield Secondary Headteachers, UK Learning Plus, Oldham Primary Headteachers.He has led a national series of Masterclasses with his friend Alistair Smith of accelerated learning fame and he has advised on, and appeared in, a series of programmes for BBC2 Wales and DVDs for all Welsh schools about thinking skills. He was a keynote speaker at the 2008 Education Show.Paul often works alongside Local Authorities. For example, he is involved in a three-year L2L initiative with Derby City LA and is also working with the majority of Wirral's primary schools on learning-to-learn. Last year Paul led Nottinghamshire's Modern PE project, and contributed to Salford's continuing push to refresh secondary school practice and improve results. Previously, he led Pembrokeshire's two-year-long Learning Learning Project, worked with 25 primary and secondary schools as part of North Wales' Learning Skills Initiative and undertook a 5-year 'residency' with Neath Port Talbot LA. In addition, for the last 8 years he has been a Teaching and Learning Consultant to the island of Jersey.With his wife Sharon, Paul wrote Covering the Curriculum with Stories (for Foundation and KS1), published by Crown House. The successful implementation of this material in primary schools has resulted in articles in the Education Guardian and TES.Beyond education, Paul has provided training for commercial organisations in London, Paris and New York.He is married, has three grown-up children, is a Stoke City FC season ticket holder and is a self-confessed vinyl junkie (old records that is, for those too young to remember such things).
