About the Book

Presenting the basic mechanisms for transfer of heat, this book gives a deeper and more comprehensive view than existing titles on the subject. Derivation and presentation of analytical and empirical methods are provided for calculation of heat transfer rates and temperature fields as well as pressure drop. The book covers thermal conduction, forced and natural laminar and turbulent convective heat transfer, thermal radiation including participating media, condensation, evaporation and heat exchangers. This book is aimed to be used in both undergraduate and graduate courses in heat transfer and thermal engineering. It can successfully be used in R & D work and thermal engineering design in industry and by consultancy firms

Table of Contents:
Contents 1 Heat conduction General theory; Analogy with electric current; Heat conduction equation for an isotropic material; Heat conduction equation in cylindrical coordinates; Heat conduction equation in spherical coordinates; Boundary conditions for heat conduction problems; Anisotropic material; References 2 Thermal conductivity Introduction; Gases; Solid substances; Liquids; Influence of pressure on the thermal conductivity; References; Further reading 3 Steady heat conduction Introduction; Heat conduction across a plane wall; Heat conduction across circular tubes and layers; Heat conduction in a spherical layer; Critical insulation thickness; Plane wall with heat sources (internal heat generation); Circular rod (or wire) with internal heat generation; Finned heat transfer surfaces; Application of the fin efficiency

About the Author :
Professor Bengt Sunden (Ph.D., thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, Chalmers University) is a Professor in the Energy Sciences Department at Lunds University, Sweden. He has served as the Head of the Department since 1995. Professor Sunden has taught both undergraduate and graduate students and supervised over 170 M.Sc. theses. His current areas of research include Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers; Computational methods of convective flow and heat transfer (CFD) in complex narrow geometries; Combustion - related heat transfer; Gas turbine heat transfer; Evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers; thermal imaging techniques; PIV; Heat exchanger networks; Multiscale and multiphysics transport phenomena in fuel cells. The author of approximately 500 papers published in international journals, books and proceedings, Professor Sunden has also been a keynote speaker at several conferences and has been invited to lecture and contribute papers on numerous occasions. The editor of a number of books in his field and the author of three textbooks in English, Professor Sunden is also a reviewer for numerous international journals. He initiated and was the first editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers and is currently associate editor of the ASME Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications. He is also editor-in-chief for the WIT Press book series Developments in Heat Transfer and he serves on the editorial board of four other journals. A fellow of ASME, Professor Sunden served as associate editor of the prestigious ASME Journal of Heat Transfer from 2005-2008. Since 2007 he has been Western Regional editor of the Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer. The recipient of several international awards, in 2006 Professor Sunden was appointed honorary professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. Professor Sunden is a recipient of the 2011 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award.
