About the Book

Water pollution is essentially an interdisciplinary field involving scientists and professionals with a wide range of expertise. It also transcends national borders as the contamination of water resources is a problem of global concern. The International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Prevention of Water Pollution, held regularly in different locations around the world, provides a forum for the presentation of the latest developments in the field and for their discussion. The papers in this volume present some of the latest results in this important field; work which is essential to understanding the nature of the problem and for proposing appropriate solutions, which may eventually provide the guidelines required to take steps towards the remediation or recovery of water resources. This book contains papers presented at the Tenth International Conference and includes the following topics: Water Quality; Pollution Prevention and Control; Remediation; Lakes and Rivers; Agricultural Contamination; Biosystems; Wastewater Treatment and Management; Novel Techniques for Water Treatment.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Water quality What priority pollutants occur in stormwater and wastewater?; Hydrochemical evaluation of different spring waters for bottling; Groundwater hydrochemistry of an overexploited aquifer: the case of the Toluca Valley, Mexico; Volatilization of benzene from gasoline: the effect of ethanol blends Section 2: Pollution prevention and control On experiments on oil-spill booms in three Atlantic coastal zones: La Rochelle, Lorient and Brest; Pollution of drinking water transported by corroded metallic pipelines; Effects of water soluble extract from the dead leaves of deciduous trees on the growth control of toxic cyanobacteria; Waste water treatment plants as redistributors of resistance genes in bacteria Section 3: Remediation Clearance of explosive ordnance: the answer to all evils?; Removal of volatile organic compounds from soil; Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of arsenic (III) adsorption onto iron oxide obtained from iron oxalate Section 4: Lakes and rivers Alkylphenol ethoxylates and bisphenol A in surface water within a heavily urbanized area, such as Paris; Trophic state evaluation for selected lakes in Yellowstone National Park, USA; The tale of two lakes: managing lake degradation, Rotorua lakes, New Zealand; Assessment of the ecological status of the shallow Lake Neor (Iran) using a macroinvertebrate community structure Section 5: Agricultural contamination Experimental field research on nitrate balance in agricultural soils; Generation and size distribution of sediment eroded in a small-scale catchment of the Western Cape (South Africa); Determination of LC50 of Diazinon toxin and linear anionic detergents on Rutilus frisii kutum Section 6: Biosystems Microbial parameters as indicators of mariculture impact on the marine environment; Toxic effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites on fish bone metabolism; Manganese Aabsorption by water hyacinth and its study as a raw material in nanotechnology Section 7: Wastewater treatment and management Fate and removal of Ppharmaceuticals and Ppersonal Ccare Pproducts (PPCPs) in a conventional activated sludge treatment process; The use of limestone, lime and MnO2 in the removal of soluble manganese from acid mine drainage; Removal of lead from aqueous solutions using Saudi activated bentonite; High Density Sludge process applied to metal-containing effluent; Modelling of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor; On-line monitorization in a decarbonator-settling tank for water treatment Section 8: Novel techniques for water treatment Development of a novel high performance cake-less filtration system; Development of an iron-amended biofilter for removal of arsenic from rural Canadian prairie potable water; Characterization of an absorbent based on Raphanus sativus (L. var.), a solid residue from biodiesel production, for the removal of methylene blue
