About the Book

Debris and hyper-concentrated flows are among the most frequent and destructive of all water related processes. They mainly affect mountainous areas in a wide range of morpho-climatic environments and in recent years have attracted more attention from the scientific communities. There is also public concern, due to the increasing frequency with which they occur and the death toll they claim. Because of greater population pressure on natural resources in hazard-prone areas and expanding activities that can increase the magnitude of hazards, planners need to improve the criteria used to identify debris flow risk areas and to design suitable prevention and mitigation measures. The Second International Conference on Debris Flow, papers from which this book is comprised, provided a forum for engineers, scientists and managers from laboratories, industries, governments and academia to exchange knowledge and expertise in the fields of erosion and slope instability, sediment transport, debris flow and debris flood data acquisition, debris flow phenomenology and laboratory tests, using the most advanced, state-of-the-art methodologies in monitoring, modelling, mechanics, hazard prediction and risk assessment. Papers have been grouped into the following subject areas: debris flow modelling; debris flow phenomenology; debris flow mobilization; debris flow disaster mitigation; case studies; debris flow rheology and laboratory tests; debris flow and landslide phenomena; debris and hyper-concentrated flows; structures and their effects on debris flow; problems and mechanics of solid-liquid flows; and shape failure and landslides.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Debris flow mitigation Infrasound measurements of debris flow; Determination of effective antecedent rainfall for debris flow forecast based on soil moisture content observation in Jiangjia Gully, China; Debris flow mitigation with flexible ring net barriers - field tests and case studies; Distribution of aerial hazard maps of debris flow on a social network service; A feasibility study on ECT monitoring of phase migration in porous solids; Development of KanakoA", a wide use 1-D and 2-D debris flow simulator equipped with GUI Section 2: Debris flow modelling Verification of a 2D finite element debris flow model using Bingham and cross rheological formulations; Numerical modelling of transient flows with high sediment concentrations; Debris flow modelling in Julian Alps using FLO-2D; Predicting debris flow susceptible areas through GIS modelling in Aparados da Serra (Brazil); Experimental research on a grid device for the kinetic energy charge dissipation of mud-flows Section 3: Case studies Evaluation of debris flow hazard to Chalala village, Quebrada de Humahuaca UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jujuy Province, Argentina; The debris flow in Log pod Mangartom, NW Slovenia; A case study on the occurrence of regional debris flow hazard in central Taiwan Section 4: Sediment transport and debris flow including woody debris Special session organised by D. De Wrachien and M. A. Lenzi Introduction; Sediment transport monitoring in a Northern Puglia watershed; Relationships among basin area, sediment transport mechanisms and wood storage in mountain basins of the Dolomites (Italian Alps); Large wood and flash floods: evidence from the 2007 event in the Davea basin (Slovenia); Dam-break shock waves: a two-phase model for mature and immature debris flow; Comparison between FLO-2D and RAMMS in debris-flow modelling: a case study in the Dolomites; Role and management of in-channel wood in relation to flood events in Southern Andes basins
