About the Book

The autobiography of the portrait artist David Griffiths, who was inspired to paint under the tutelage of his school art teacher, Elis Gwyn, after moving to Pwllheli to escape Hitler's bombs on the banks of the Mersey.

Review :
Treuliodd bedair blynedd yn Ysgol Gelf y Slade yn Llundain ac wedi cyfnod fel athro celf, agorodd oriel ym Mhwllheli yn 1964. Y flwyddyn ganlynol, roedd ganddo ran allweddol yn sefydlu oriel yr Albany yng Nghaerdydd. Yn fuan wedi hynny, gwireddwyd ei freuddwyd i fod yn artist amser llawn. Yn ystod ei yrfa, peintiodd bortreadau o rai o wynebau enwocaf Cymru gan gynnwys Gwynfor Evans, Rhodri Morgan, Dafydd Wigley, Cynan, Syr Geraint Evans, Syr Bryn Terfel, Shane Williams, Barry John, Siân Phillips ac yn fwyaf diweddar Elin Jones, Llywydd y Senedd. Mae’n ddiddorol hefyd clywed ei atgofion am nifer o artistiaid eraill y cyfnod gan gynnwys Kyffin Williams, Ceri Richards, Donald McIntyre, Josef Herman, Charles Wyatt Warren a Wil Roberts. Un o’i gomisiynau cyntaf oedd portreadu Cynan. Cawn gip ar y bersonoliaeth a’r bywyd teuluol yr ochr draw i ganfas yr arlunydd gan David Griffiths ac mae’i atgofion am Cynan yn nodweddiadol o hynny: ‘Cefais groeso gwresog gan Cynan a Mrs Jones cyn iddi esgusodi ei hun i fynd i baratoi cinio. Gofynnodd Cynan i mi os oeddwn yn ffansïo diod gan agor cabinet coctel gyda dewis cynhwysfawr o ddiodydd. Teimlais ei bod hi’n well gwrthod rhag iddo gael y syniad anghywir am artist ifanc a oedd yn mynd i’w ddarlunio. Treuliais ychydig amser yn braslunio ac yn tynnu lluniau gyda fy nghamera. Y peth nesaf a wyddwn oedd bod Mrs Jones yn rhedeg i mewn i’r stafell yn hynod o ypsét. ”Dwi wedi llosgi’r cinio!” meddai. “Y pryd cyntaf i mi baratoi iddo ... dwi wedi llosgi cinio Cynan!” Teimlais ei bod hi’n amser i mi wneud fy esgusodion a gadael!’
