About the Book

The poems of Hedd Wyn (Ellis Humphrey Evans, 1887-1917), whose name resonates down the years, as his story saddens, angers and inspires us.

Table of Contents:
Ganrif yn ôl, lladdwyd gŵr ifanc yn un o frwydrau dieflig y Rhyfel Mawr, ymhell o gân yr afon yn ei gwm. Gwastraffwyd miloedd o fywydau tebyg ar yr un diwrnod ac unwyd teuluoedd ar ddwy ochr yr ymladd yn eu colledion a’u galar. Erys enw Hedd Wyn ar gof ei genedl. Daeth Yr Ysgwrn, cartref y bugail, yn aelwyd y mae’n rhaid pererindota yno yn gyson. Mae’i stori yn ein tristáu, ein cynddeiriogi a'n hysbrydoli o hyd. Bugail, nid milwr oedd Hedd Wyn. Roedd hefyd yn fardd wrthi’n dysgu yr hen grefft gywrain o drin geiriau. Cyflawnodd gamp wrth gipio’r Gadair yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1917 ond ergyd chwerw yng nghynffon yr hanes oedd iddo gael ei ladd cyn cael ei gadeirio. Lladdwyd addewid, ac oherwydd hynny daeth ei stori i gynrychioli cymaint o’r doniau ifanc eraill a daflwyd i’r ffosydd. Er mor ifanc ydoedd, mae ei gerddi yn dangos y byddai’i gyfraniad i farddoniaeth Gymraeg yr 20fed ganrif wedi bod yn un nodedig pe bai wedi cael byw. Er gwaethaf y chwithdod o’i golli, mae themâu cynnes yn ei waith – cariad at wlad, pobl, cyfeillgarwch a heddwch. Dyma’r gwerthoedd yr ydym yn chwilio amdanynt wrth geisio dod i delerau â’r hyn ddigwyddodd ganrif yn ôl.

Review :
Eleni, a hithau’n ganmlwyddiant marwolaeth Hedd Wyn, aeth Gwasg Carreg Gwalch ati i gyhoeddi detholiad o’i gerddi i gofio’r achlysur. Ymddangosodd yr argraffiad cyntaf o Cerddi’r Bugail flwyddyn ar ôl y Gadair Ddu, o dan olygyddiaeth J. J. Williams, a chyhoeddwyd y fersiwn diweddaraf – hyd at ymddangosiad y gyfrol hon – gan Alan Llwyd yn 1994, i gyd-fynd â chyhoeddi'r cofiant safonol, Gwae Fi Fy Myw, a’r ffilm am ei fywyd. Yn addas iawn, bardd ifanc arall o Feirion, sef Gruffudd Antur, a gomisiynwyd i olygu’r detholiad diweddaraf hwn. Yn ei gyflwyniad pwrpasol gosodir y cerddi yn eu cyd-destun, gan fynd ati i geisio gwahaniaethu rhwng y bardd a’r chwedloniaeth a ddaeth yn rhan ohono wedi’i farwolaeth. Yn ogystal, ailargraffwyd teyrnged i Hedd Wyn gan William Morris, a fu, yn ddiweddarach, yn Archdderwydd Cymru. Caiff y gyfrol ei chyfoethogi hefyd gan luniau lliw Keith O’Brien. Ynddynt gwelir y Rhinogydd, y Moelwynion, y Traws a’r llyn a’r lleuad borffor dros Gwm Prysor yn eu holl ogoniant. Dyma’r mannau a fowldiodd awen Hedd Wyn a’r tirwedd yr hiraethai amdano yn ffosydd Ffrainc. Eto, cyfoeth pennaf y gyfrol yw’r cerddi. Deil nifer o’r telynegion a’r englynion i ganu yn y cof. Canodd yn synhwyrus i brydferthwch natur ei gynefin ac i bobol y gymdeithas y’i magwyd ynddi wrth i’r Rhyfel Mawr daflu ei gysgodion bygythiol dros y tangnefedd hwnnw. Ond hyd yn oed yn ei wisg filwrol glynodd at ei egwyddorion heddychol, a chanrif yn ddiweddarach deil ei awen yr un mor berthnasol i ni heddiw yn y dyddiau dreng sydd ohoni. I gloi, cawn erthygl gan Naomi Jones yn ymfalchïo fod Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri, gyda chefnogaeth y Llywodraeth a Chomisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru, wedi cymryd cyfrifoldeb dros yr Ysgwrn er mwyn ei ddiogelu ar gyfer y genedl. Yn yr un modd, bydd y gyfrol hardd hon hefyd yn cadw’r cof yn fyw am stori drasig Ellis Humphrey Evans o’r Ysgwrn, a fu farw ar faes y gad bum wythnos cyn y bu rhaid taenu cwrlid du dros Gadair yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol ym Mhenbedw yn 1917.
