About the Book

A richly colour illustrated volume by Pierino Algieri, Snowdonia's most popular photographer. Born in Trefriw in the Conwy Valley and brought up on a smallholding nearby, he visits remote areas regularly with his work, and has learnt through experience where to find the best views during the various seasons.

Review :
If I had a penny for every camera ever aimed at the glories of Snowdonia ... There cannot have been many visitors to Snowdonia or many residents for that matter who have not felt the urge to preserve the beauty they see around them by some means or other. And in recent years, the camera has been their main instrument of choice. In the hands of a capable photographer, this is an instrument which can capture the magic of the moment, catch the breath of light and preserve for generations the most fleeting and fragile beauty of an instant. Sadly, in the wrong hands, it can also make the extraordinary seem dull and ordinary, and the fantastic appear mundane. Fortunately, Pierino Algieri is a very capable photographer. Algieri has an eye for a picture. He is a photographer who served, before the dawn of the digital age, his long apprenticeship in the craft of film-based photography. This becomes apparent in the book's text. There are, in a way, several different books within the covers of Pierino's Snowdonia. There is a selection of the photographer's work; a brief autobiographical section, based mainly on a tribute to his father; and brief paragraphs accompanying the major photographs which describe the circumstances under which they were taken and providing us with an incidental guide to some of the more picturesque parts of Snowdonia and the surrounding area. To the pedant, the title of the book may appear somewhat misleading because there are many fine pictures here that were not taken in Snowdonia, but chapter headings are clear enough. Most of the photographs in this book, and all the best ones, are of landscapes. This is what Pierino's work is about. The land, the light, and the presence of man within the landscape as manifested by the traces he leaves behind in the form of ruined farms, quarry buildings and so on. Naturally, in a collection of work like this, some photographs are better, stronger, than others. Some are stereotypical, telling us nothing new and showing us little of interest; and some, dare I say it, verge on being chocolate-box pictures (although some of these, like the one of shire horses on page 12, may prove to be the most popular images in the book). Yet, they never quite cross the line. And those weaker pictures are few; the great majority are testament to the photographer's great skill.
