Review :
Rwy’n cofio rhywbeth ddwedwyd wrthyf gan y diweddar Aled Eames. ‘O ddarllen gwaith rhai o haneswyr amlycaf Cymru gallet feddwl fod Cymru’n wlad gannoedd o filltiroedd o’r môr – rywle yng nghanol gwlad enfawr fel yr Undeb Sofietaidd.’ Pwyslais felly roddwyd ar hanes Cymru a’i rhan gwbl allweddol yn natblygiad y chwyldro diwydiannol. Diolch i’r drefn, gwnaeth Aled Eames gyfraniad mawr yn cywiro’n argraff honno. Ac yn awr dyma gyfrol sylweddol iawn gan Robin Evans, nid yn unig yn rhoi i Gymru ei phriod le yn hanes morwriaeth ond lle’r gwragedd a merched yn y stori fawr honno, o 1700 hyd heddiw. Campwaith o gyfrol gan fab capten llong, Bob Evans o Foelfre, sy’n dwyn ynghyd ddwy stori ymylol hanes Cymru. Cofiwn fod gan Gymru dros fil o filltiroedd o arfordir – llawer, llawer hwy na Chlawdd Offa. I roi gwrhydri’r hanes yn ei gyd-destun dyma ystadegyn ysgytwol o’r gyfrol. Ceir tabl – Prydeinig – sy’n cymharu nifer marwolaethau’r llynges fasnach gyda nifer y marwolaethau yn y pyllau glo yn y blynyddoedd rhwng 1891 a 1904. Ym 1891 collodd un o bob 114 morwr ei fywyd o’i gymharu ag un o bob 665 glöwr. Ym 1904, y rhifau oedd 1 morwr o bob 219 o’i gymharu ag un o bob 808 yn y diwydiant glo. Mae ystod ymchwil Robin Evans yn rhyfeddol. Cawn ddadansoddiad manwl feistrolgar o economi’r cymunedau glan môr, o bentrefi bychain Cymraeg eu hiaith i drefi mawr fel Abertawe a Chaerdydd. Cawn olwg fanwl ar gyfraniad hollbwysig y menywod i’r economi honno ac effaith a thraul y ffordd honno o fyw ar wragedd oedd yn magu plant â’u gwŷr oddi cartref am fisoedd, weithiau flynyddoedd ar y tro, rhai ohonynt yn byw mewn tai gwael oedd yn achos afiechydon. Cawn hanes menywod arbennig iawn fel Sarah Jane Rees (Cranogwen) fu’n hwylio’r glannau gyda’i thad, a phan benodwyd hi’n ysgolfeistres ym Mhontgarreg bu’n dysgu morwriaeth i fechgyn ifanc. Straeon rhyfeddol am ddewrder, wedyn, a gallu a chyfraniad rhai gwragedd oedd yn hwylio gyda’i gwŷr, fel gwraig y Capten Hugh Thomas, y Cambrian Chieftain, a aeth i draferthion mewn storm echrydus yn y Môr Tawel ym 1894. Achubwyd Mrs Thomas a’i dau blentyn gan long arall, y Dee, a thybiwyd bod y Cambrian Chieftain wedi’i cholli. Aeth y Dee rhagddi i Valparaiso ac yn syth ar ôl cyrraedd yno, er gwaethaf ei sefyllfa enbyd, anfonodd Mrs Thomas adroddiad manwl a chynhwysfawr o’r trychineb oedd yn brawf ei bod yn gyfarwydd â phob agwedd o forwriaeth i berchnogion y Cambrian Chieftain yn Lerpwl. Yn wyrthiol llwyddodd y Capten Thomas a’r criw i unioni’r llong a chyrraedd Taltal yn ddiogel, gannoedd o filltiroedd i’r gogledd o Valparaiso. Stori arall yw honno am y ras enwog o San Francisco i Cóbh, Iwerddon, yn 1901, a enillwyd gan y Glenesslin dan gapteiniaeth T. Barlow Thomas o Gaernarfon, gyda’i wraig oedd gydag ef yn dangos dewrder rhyfeddol yn cefnogi a chynorthwyo’i gŵr. Mae yma ystod enfawr o astudiaeth gymdeithasol sy’n ymdrin â lle’r merched mewn gweithgareddau sy’n amrywio o’r amheus ac anghyfreithlon fel smyglo, wreca a phuteinio i ddulliau parchus o ddod â’r ddau ben llinyn ynghyd fel pysgota, cadw tafarnau, darparu ar gyfer y diwydiant ymwelwyr ac fel buddsoddwyr yn y llynges fasnach. Hyd yn oed fel ceidwaid goleudai. Tlodi cenedl yw ei thorri oddi wrth ei gorffennol. Mae hon yn gyfrol o bwys. Dim ond cyflwyniad yw hi i faes enfawr, medd yr awdur. Mae e’n llawer iawn rhy ddiymhongar.
