About the Book

The book explains - and illustrates - the difference between coracles on rivers in Wales and England, and looks at the Scottish and Irish versions of the craft, and then at the coracles of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia - especially Vietnam, the only place in the world where coracles are thriving.

Review :
The authors love of coracles and their related crafts began when he saw an upper Dee coracle being used in the Llangollen area, as a schoolboy in the 1940s. This provided the spark for his lifelong interest and passion. As John-Williams Davies at St Fagans Museum notes in the introduction: No one is better qualified to write on the subject than Peter Badge. The author builds on long and detailed research in the field, particularly the works of John Hornell, a scientist and ethnologist who published extensively on the subject in the 1930s and 40s, and then J. Geraint Jenkins who produced an authoritative work on coracles in England and Wales in the 1970s. Badges contribution to this body of research is enhanced by his extensive fieldwork and in-depth experience of coracle making and handling. Illustrated by some fascinating plates of coracles in use worldwide, he traces their long history, going back to the original home of skin boats in Asia during the first millennium BC, and on to the Native American Bull boats. He follows this with a comparison between different types of European coracles and curraghs, a study of coracles used in the Middle East the Quaffas of Iraq, and concludes with an overview of coracles in Asia. Here, he focuses on their vital use in the fishing industry in Vietnam. Not only is the author an expert in the subject, he has been a committed and tireless campaigner for the protection of coracle making in Wales, recognising and challenging its decline in modern times through the foundation of the Coracle Society in 1991. Authoritative and informative, this book is a vital contribution to the subject.
