About the Book

In 2006, Gwyn Griffiths wrote a history of 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. This is Evan James's turn, author of the words of Wales's National Anthem. Here we have the story of his life and a mass of poetry in danger of being forgotten.

Review :
English review follows Yn 2006 cyhoeddodd Gwyn Griffiths Gwlad fy Nhadau, cyfrol fechan yn olrhain hanes ein hanthem genedlaethol, Hen Wlad fy Nhadau. Wrth baratoir gyfrol honno, darganfyddodd fod llawer mwy iw ddweud am awdur y geiriau, Evan James. Yn un peth roedd yn fardd a gyfansoddodd lu o gerddi, er ychydig iawn or cerddi yna a gafodd eu cyhoeddi yn ystod ei fywyd ac wedi hynny. I nodi dau ganmlwyddiant geni Evan James, dyma gyfrol syn edrych yn fwy manwl ar ei fywyd ai syniadau, ai waith fel bardd, ynghyd thros 80 oi gerddi yn y mesurau caeth a rhydd. Cerddi lle ac amser arbennig ydyn nhw - Morgannwg a Gwent cyn ei Seisnigeiddio gan y Chwyldro Diwydiannol. Maer gyfrol yn ddwyieithog, gydar Gymraeg ar Saesneg yn gyfochrog - ar trosiadau Saesneg or cerddi weithiaun fantais i ddeall ambell air neu derm amaethyddol sydd wedi mynd yn ddieithr erbyn heddiw. Mewn rhagymadrodd difyr a hawdd ei ddarllen ceir hanes dyn syn cael ei ddisgrifio gan Gwyn Griffiths fel un or bobl od hynny ddaeth i fyw i Bontypridd yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, dyn gwahanol iawn ir rhelyw o Gymry gwlatgar ei gyfnod. Yn sicr, maer darlun ohono yn y rhagymadrodd yn cyfiawnhaur fath ddisgrifiad. Yna dawr cerddi, wedi eu casglu ynghyd dan wahanol benawdau: Gwladgarol, Natur, Cymdeithasol a Diwydiannol, Teuluol, Serch a Doniol. Or dosbarth olaf daw hwn, triban i wr a syrthiodd i lawr grisiau tafarn y Llanofer, Pontypridd, oedd yn fan cyfarfod i Evan James ai gyd-lenorion (Clic y Bont): Lle nafus yw Llanofer I ddyn fon yfed llawer, Fe syrthiodd William Morgan Fawr, Wr salw, i lawr ir seler. Unwaith eto, mae Gwyn Griffiths wedi gwneud cymwynas gyda chyfrol syn dwyn sylw at ddyn syn fwy nag awdur un gerdd, er mai geiriau ein hanthem genedlaethol ywr gerdd honno. Allan Pickard ************************** In 2006 Gwyn Griffiths published Gwlad fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers), a booklet investigating the history of our national anthem. As he gathered his material for the book, Griffiths discovered that there was much more information he could give on the author of the words -- Evan James. The man who wrote the words of our national anthem was, indeed, a talented bard even though most of his poetry was not published during his lifetime. To mark the bicentenary of the birth date of Evan James, this volume gives a detailed view of James ideas and poetical creations. In all, over 80 of his poems are included. Most of the poems refer to the counties of Glamorgan and Gwent before they were anglicized by the Industrial Revolution. This is a bilingual book and is therefore quite useful for a Welsh learner since the Welsh and English texts are presented side by side. The English adaptations are also a great aid to understand some words or traditions that are not in existence nowadays. In a preface -- entertaining and easy to read -- Griffiths presents Evan James as quite a different patriotic character who settled in Pontypridd in the nineteenth century. The poems quoted in the book are classified under various topics some poems are patriotic, some refer to the rise of industrialism while others are full of humour and love. Gwyn Griffiths has presented us with a book worth reading. We will no doubt remember Evan James as the creator of our national anthem, but having read this book, we will also be aware of his other works and the topics that inspired a Ponty patriot nearly two hundred years ago.
