Review :
Priodol iawn ym mlwyddyn dathlu can mlynedd a hanner ers cyfansoddi’n hanthem genedlaethol yw cael cyfrol sy’n olrhain hanes ‘Hen Wlad fy Nhadau’. Ond mae’r gyfrol ddifyr, ddarllenadwy hon yn llawer mwy na hynny, oherwydd ynddi mae’r awdur wedi llwyddo i gyflwyno darlun o’r gymdeithas farddol a cherddorol a roddodd fod i’r anthem yn 1856 ,a thrwy hynny mae wedi rhoi inni gyd-destun i hanes yr anthem. Man cychwyn y gyfrol yw hanes cyfansoddi’r anthem ei hun, ac ymdrinnir â’r gwahanol fersiynau o’r stori gyfarwydd: sut y lluniwyd yr alaw a’r geiriau, sut y cafodd ei chanu gyntaf, sut y gwelodd olau dydd trwy gyfrwng Eisteddfod Llangollen yn 1858 ac yna trwy law Owain Alaw yn Gems of Welsh Melody, a sut y tyfodd yn raddol yn anthem genedlaethol y Cymry. Ceir pennod ddiddorol ar y gerddoriaeth a beth oedd bwriad gwreiddiol James James (Iago ab Ieuan) o ran cyweirnod a thempo, a thrafodir y ddadl gyhoeddus a fu yn y wasg yn 1884 ynghylch gwreiddioldeb yr alaw. Mae’r awdur yn cadarnhau nad oes lle i amau dilysrwydd awduriaeth James James. Yr hyn sy’n cyfoethogi’r hanes yw’r darlun byw a gynigir inni o Bontypridd yng nghanol y 19eg ganrif, yn dref Gymraeg oedd yn prysur newid dan ddylanwad mewnlifiad, ond yn lle hefyd oedd yn cadw hen draddodiad barddonol y cyfnod cyn-ddiwydiannol. Roedd Evan James (Ieuan ab Iago), awdur geiriau’r anthem, yn perthyn i’r traddodiad hwn, ac yn fardd o gryn allu o fewn cylch diwylliant poblogaidd ei ddydd. Un o gryfderau arbennig y gyfrol hon yw gosod ‘Hen Wlad fy Nhadau’ o fewn ffrâm y diwylliant hwnnw. Adroddir hefyd sut y codwyd cofeb i’r awduron ym Mharc Ynys Angharad ym Mhontypridd a sut mae’r anthem wedi teithio i’r gwledydd Celtaidd eraill. Ceir nifer o luniau diddorol i gyd-fynd â’r testun, ac er gwaethaf nifer o fân wallau argraffu, mae’n gyfrol hylaw a glân. Diolch i Gwyn Griffiths (dim perthynas, gyda llaw) am gyflwyno’r hanes mewn ffordd mor loyw a diddorol.
