About the Book

A collection of humorous stories originally published by Y Cymro newspaper, 1971-2. Local news from an imaginary village - stories that are amusing and sometimes more intense, but always full of humour. With cartoons by Elwyn Ioan.

Review :
Fel y dywed y broliant, ‘Newyddion lleol am bentref dychmygol yng nghefn gwlad Cymru oedd colofn "Ffoltia Mawr" yn Y Cymro yn 1971-2. Bryd hynny doedd dim un papur bro wedi'i sefydlu yng Nghymru, ond roedd y math o newyddion a ddeuai i fritho tudalennau’r rheiny eisoes yn fyw ac yn iach yn y cymdeithasau Cymraeg.’ Dyma’r colofnau hynny bellach ar ffurf cyfrol, a honno’n agor gydag enghreifftiau campus o’r hiwmor y gellir disgwyl ei weld ynddi: ‘Congraj i Neli, merch hynaf Gwarcha Bach, ar basio Domestig Syiyns a Gwaith Gwnïo. Un garw ydi Neli, mae hi’n medru rhoi eda yn nodwydd ers pan oedd hi ddim o beth. Mi glywis dros cowntar ddoe fod ei thad wedi medru gwthio Neli i colej cwcio Llandrillo yn Rhost. Llongddryllion lawer i Gaynor Gryffis hithau, wedi gneud yn dda iawn, wedi cael ei Hinglish Langwej am y trydydd tro yn olynol.’ Y math yma o newyddion lleol gweddol ddibwys sy’n llunio trwch y gyfrol, ond yn y rhain fe gawn ddarlun o gyfnod ym mywyd cymdeithas yng nghefn gwlad Cymru – cyfnod pan oedd mynd o hyd ar y cymdeithasau diwylliadol, ond bod y teledu yn gynyddol yn mynd â bryd y boblogaeth. Er mai cymdeithas bur fewnblyg ydi cymdeithas Ffoltia Mawr, mae’n anochel bod digwyddiadau allanol yn effeithio arni, gyda ‘Brwydr yr Iaith, brwydr y llaeth, brwydr y goleuni, brwydr y glo’ yn ddim ond rhai ohonynt. Gellir gweld sut roedd y golofn yn cymryd ei lle ochr yn ochr â newyddion ‘go iawn’ ar dudalennau’r Cymro yn ei chyfnod. Er bod llais Wil Sam ei hun i’w glywed yn amlwg yn y gwaith, cymeriad pur wahanol sy’n ein tywys drwy’r newyddion, sef Confal Tomos, Drepars and Grosars – Cymro henffasiwn sy’n ymfalchïo nad ydyw o ‘natur ymfflamychol’ ac sy’n croesawu ‘fusutors’ am eu bod yn cyfoethogi Saesneg y plant lleol (heb sôn am ei boced yntau). Confal a’i fath yw gwrthrych pennaf y dychan, er bod digon o gymeriadau stoc eraill yn dod dan y lach hefyd. Tipyn o ‘hen wlanen’ ydyw, dan siars i beidio â thrafod ‘politics’ gan ei wraig. Mynnu llithro i mewn a wna hwnnw er ei waetha, wrth i Vincent, y mab, ddod yn aelod llafar o Gymdeithas yr Iaith, ac wrth i fwy a mwy o’i gymdogion eu cael eu hunain yn ymladd brwydrau yn erbyn y grymoedd estron sy’n bygwth parhad y gymdeithas wledig Gymraeg. Cynnil, fodd bynnag, yw ymdriniaeth yr awdur â’r thema honno, ac ni ellir gwadu mai cyfrol ysgafn, ddoniol, ydi Newyddion Ffoltia Mawr yn bennaf. Mae llawer o’r hiwmor yn ‘weledol’ iawn, a hwnnw wedi ei gyfoethogi gan gartwnau bywiog Elwyn Ioan. Elfen arall o’r hiwmor yw’r chwarae ar eiriau a’r enwau digri sydd ar wahanol gymeriadau. Prin bod hyn yn cael ei wneud mewn ffordd arbennig o grafog, fel a geir yng nghyfrolau’r Dyn Dŵad, er enghraifft; mae’n perthyn yn nes i’r arfer gwerinol o lysenwi cymdogion ac, ar ei orau, yn cyfrannu at y darlun o gymdeithas glòs mewn lle ac adeg arbennig. Credaf ei bod yn deg dweud, fodd bynnag, fod elfennau o’r hiwmor sydd wedi dyddio. Syndod, er enghraifft, oedd gweld fod ambell jôc amheus ynglŷn â ‘gweithio fel nicars blac’ ac ati wedi’u cynnwys yn y gyfrol. Byddai’r gyfrol yn sicr wedi bod ar ei hennill o docio rhywfaint ar y deunydd, gan ei fod yn tueddu ar brydiau i fod braidd yn ailadroddus – fel y gall colofnau o’r fath fod. Prin y bydd hynny’n mennu ar y mwynhad i ffans Wil Sam, fodd bynnag, nac ychwaith ar y pleser a gaiff y sawl sy’n chwilio am lyfr ysgafn, hwyliog, i’w ddarllen dros y Nadolig wrth bori ynddo.
