About the Book

The body of Heulwen Breeze-Evans, Plaid Cymru candidate in the coming Assembly Election, is found in her Welshpool office, and Inspector Daf Dafis has to investigate her murder. As she is a pillar of the community, Daf realises that many wish to see her dead.

Review :
Stori dditectif fyrlymus bron i 400 tudalen yw hon, wedi ei lleoli yn Sir Drefaldwyn, sef sir enedigol yr awdures, a’r sir y mae’n byw ynddi ar hyn o bryd. Ardal amaethyddol yw hon, ac mae blas y pridd yn drwm ar y nofel, gyda’i chymeriadau gwledig, ac mae ffraethineb cymdeithas cefn gwlad yn britho’r ddeialog – ffraethineb digon cignoeth ar brydiau. Mae’r ffaith fod yma enwau pentrefi a threfi go iawn ym Maldwyn yn hytrach nag enwau gwneud yn help i roi hygrededd i’r stori hefyd. Mae swyddfa Plaid Cymru yn y Trallwng yn mynd ar dân – swyddfa sy’n cael ei rhentu i’r Blaid gan Rhys Bowen, yr Aelod Cynulliad Torïaidd. Caiff yr Arolygydd Daf Dafis ei roi yng ngofal yr ymchwiliad, ac wrth i Operation Green Fuse gychwyn, daw’n amlwg fod rhywun yn y swyddfa pan aeth ar dân, a bod corff llosgedig y person hwnnw’n dal i fod yno. Darllenwn mai’r person a losgwyd yw Heulwen Breeze-Evans, ymgeisydd y Blaid yn Etholiadau’r Cynulliad. Daw’n amlwg hefyd fod yna nifer o bobl a allai fod wedi cyflawni’r weithred, gan fod Heulwen yn wraig hynod o amhoblogaidd, a oedd wedi pechu yn erbyn llawer o bobl. Dywedir bod ‘rhai yn awyddus iawn i weld Heulwen Breeze-Evans – y ddynes berffaith, y wraig ffyddlon, y fam garedig, yr aelod blaengar o bob pwyllgor – dan ddaear, gan gynnwys ei theulu ei hun’. A theulu cymhleth yw un Heulwen, teulu sydd byth a beunydd yng ngyddfau ei gilydd. Mae Phil ei gŵr, sy’n dipyn o lipryn golygus, yn caru â Phwyles ifanc hardd o’r enw Basia; mae’r ferch, Nansi, a geisiodd dorri gwddf ei mam â chyllell flynyddoedd ynghynt, yn briod â’r Parch Seth Bockarie, ac mae’r mab, Jac, fel unben yn rhedeg y fferm. Ar ben hynny roedd Heulwen mewn perthynas lesbiaidd â Jan Cilgwyn, yr Aelod Cynulliad, ond i gymhlethu pethau roedd Lisa Powell a Jan hefyd mewn perthynas. Roedd Nansi’n casáu ei mam fwy fyth ar ôl iddi ei darganfod yn y gwely gyda dynes arall, a hynny yn ei chartref hi yng Nghaerdydd. Ceir sawl perthynas rywiol o bob math yng nghorff y stori a rhoir sylw i agweddau pobl at rywioldeb ac at bobl hoyw. Un o nodweddion y nofel yw’r amrywiaeth eang o wahanol gymeriadau a geir ynddi. Down i wybod llawer am nifer o’r cymeriadau hyn, tra bo eraill yn bobl yr ymylon. Ond wrth eu gwau yn gelfydd i gorff y stori, gwnaiff yr awdur i ni ddechrau amau nifer ohonynt fel llofruddion posibl. Mae’r stori’n llawn digwyddiadau a sefyllfaoedd diddorol, a cheir amryw o droeon a datgeliadau annisgwyl wrth i’r hanes fynd yn ei flaen. Mae rhywbeth yn digwydd o hyd ac mae’r cyfan yn datblygu’n sionc a hwylus. Mae’n gwneud y darllenydd yn awyddus i weld ble bydd y stori’n arwain nesaf. Un peth sy’n siŵr o apelio at y darllenydd yw’r cyffyrddiadau ysgafn a’r hiwmor sy’n frith drwy’r nofel. Amlygir yr hiwmor hwnnw drwy ddywediadau bachog a gogleisiol rhai o’r cymeriadau, ond hefyd drwy ambell sefyllfa. Er enghraifft, pan ddaw Belle Pashley a’i chŵn i helpu gyda’r ymchwiliad, cawn wybod mai enwau’r cŵn yw D.J., Saunders a Valentine. Dyma nofel fywiog, gyfoes felly, sy’n llwyddo i ddeffro chwilfrydedd y darllenydd, a’i wneud yn awyddus i wybod beth sy’n dod nesaf o hyd. Er ei bod yn nofel eitha hir, nid yw’n syrffedus, a phleser pur yw dilyn hynt yr ymchwiliad a cheisio dyfalu pwy mewn gwirionedd a fu’n gyfrifol am farwolaeth Heulwen Breeze-Evans.
