About the Book

Dafydd ap Gwilym - one of the nation's best poets ... but was he really? A satirical look at the life of this colourful medieval character.

Review :
Mae Dafydd ap Gwilym yn un o’r ychydig feirdd o’r Oesoedd Canol sy’n parhau i hawlio’i le yn y meddwl poblogaidd. Y darlun ohono fel merchetwr di-ddal sy’n dod i’r cof gan amlaf, dybiwn i, carwr anlwcus a thruenus sy, er hynny, ac fel y gŵyr ei gynulleidfa’n iawn, yn dipyn o dderyn. Ar sail y tour de force ‘Trafferth mewn Tafarn’ y ffurfiwyd y darlun hwnnw’n bennaf, yn gam neu’n gymwys, ond da cofio hefyd fod darluniau eraill o Ddafydd yn y farddoniaeth: y Cristion taer, y diwinydd heriol, y dychanwr ffyrnig, y naturiaethwr sylwgar … a llawer iawn mwy. Yr amrywiaeth hwnnw, natur lithrig ac amlhaenog y portread ohono yn ei waith ei hun, yw’r rheswm pam fod Dafydd yn gymeriad byw yn nychymyg llawer heddiw. A neb yn fwy na Daniel Davies, sy’n byw ym mro Dafydd nid nepell o Frogynin, a lwyddodd yn ei nofel Ceiliog Dandi i godi’r darlun poblogaidd hwnnw o’r bardd a mynd ati, heb ymddiheuro dim, i gael hwyl fawr ag e. Er gosod y stori yn yr Oesoedd Canol, nid pedwaredd ganrif ar ddeg yr hanesydd na’r golygydd testunol mohoni ond, yn hytrach, ryw oes arallfydol sy’n debycach i raglen Blackadder nag i awdl ‘Cilmeri’. Dyma Gymru led gyfarwydd Dyddgu a’r Bwa Bach, ynghyd ag eraill llai cyfarwydd: Siôn Môn, Rhisiart Prisiart ac Arolygwyr Ffyrdd ei Fawrhydi y Brenin Edward y Trydydd. Mae Daniel, sy’n dynnwr coes o fri, yn ein baglu o’r cychwyn cyntaf: nid yw Dafydd y nofel hon yn fardd da, ffaith sy’n gwbl amlwg i’w gyd-feirdd ac i bawb arall ond ef ei hun. Yn wir, nid yn y cymeriad y mae llais y Dafydd go iawn i’w glywed groywaf ond, yn hytrach, yn llais yr awdur ei hun, sy’n ymrithio’n ddychanwr tan gamp â’r gallu i saernïo stori garlamus, liwgar a chwbl ffarsaidd. Yn hynny o beth, mae darluniau cellweirus ffug-hynafol Ruth Jên yn cyd-fynd yn arbennig o dda â’r testun – yr unig drueni yw bod safon y lluniau yn y copi print yn wael mewn mannau. Nofel yw hon sy’n cloddio’n ddiedifar o chwareus yn chwarel barddoniaeth Dafydd ap Gwilym. Byddai’r dyn ei hun, siawns, wedi amenio.
