North Pembrokeshire offers some of the finest coastal walking in Wales. In his descriptions of 18 walks in the area, illustrated by his own photographs, the author selects some of the better known locations and also invites the walker to explore some of its hidden delights inland to rivers, woodlands and up on to the wild terrain of the Preseli Hills. As a prelude to the individual walking descriptions, there is an insightful introduction to the geology and wildlife of the region and a brief history of human interaction with its landscape from the appearance of Palaeolithic cave dwellers to the Neolithic farmers and their great burial chambers, through to the Age of Saints and up to the present day. The introduction is aptly concluded with a history of the pub, the brewing traditions of monasteries and the development of taverns and ale houses to quench the thirst of traders, pilgrims and travellers. Praise to the author in this section for his reference to CAMRA and the Campaign for Real Ale, and its support for small, independent breweries. There are now over forty micro-breweries in Wales and the choice of pubs here, will allow the walker to sample a good selection of these treasures. An opportunity to exercise your legs, enjoy the history and culture of this landscape, whilst supporting the independent brewery movement, is well worth the effort. The routes (all but one are circular) include at least one pub with historical interest to tempt all appetites and walking abilities ranging from easy to moderate and more strenuous. There is all the information you need here on location, starting points, public transport, facilities and historical notes for each walk. The authors choice of varied terrain and pubs is excellent: try a pint served from a jug through a hatch at Bessies, The Dyffryn Arms, Pontfaen in the gorgeous Gwaun Valley; rest and replenish after a strenuous day on the hill at Tafarn Sinc, Rosebush (closed in 1992 and then bought and re-opened by the local community); contemplate the mysteries of the bleeding yew at Nevern at the Trewern Arms, or, possibly, the greater mysteries of St. Brynachs communion with angels after a walk on Carn Ingli, at a good selection of pubs in Newport. A very good guide, with sound advice on the necessary accompanying OS maps for the area, and with a well researched appreciation of the long and healthy association between good walking and a well-earned good pint of beer, or two.
