About the Book

The mountains via Betws-y-coed, Caernarfon, Dolgellau, Porthmadog. The inner heartland of Wales is easily identified. The heaped-up masses of the mountains are visible from a far distance and their bulk blocks all but a few ways of approach.

Review :
This is a slim but valuable document describing how and why the gateway towns of the remarkable and diverse area of north Wales came into existence. Present-day Snowdonia is one of Europes major tourist attractions. Known in the Middle Ages as Pura Wallia, it was considered as independent Wales, being ruled over during the 13th century by Llewelyn the Great. We read of the five gateway towns Conwy, Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Dolgellau and Betws-y-coed; a lavishly illustrated chapter is given to each. There are few of us who have not heard of, or indeed visited, Betws-y-coed, but how many of us know that the original village was called Bed-hus. meaning 'prayer house' in Old English? The author goes on to explain: It is not uncommon among the names of Welsh villages referring to an old religious site, perhaps originally the cell of the founding saint which in many cases became the focal church of a village. One must assume that the name was given to the village by the invaders, and became in due course transliterated onto Welsh. It is ironic that a Welsh place-name which now gives Anglo-phone something of a problem (Betsi is a frequent solution) turns out to be of Anglo-Saxon origin. One of my favourite towns north Wales is Conwy, with its many small boutiques and cafs, and its fine castle which overlooks the river and the country far beyond. There is much ancient architecture remaining within its narrow thoroughfares. Originally, the author explains, the town grew as a posting point, and it has now gone full circle and is once more a convenient base from which to visit Anglesey and the National Park. Michael Senior has provided the reader with considerable information and data without tedium. The book is certainly well-researched and written by a knowledgeable hand. There is much to be learnt and digested.
