About the Book

A monograph about the unique contribution of John Griffith (1821-77), Wales's first professional journalist, in particular during the stirring election campaigning in Ceredigion in 1868.

Review :
Fel un a fun hacio yn y maes newyddiadurol ers deugain mlynedd bellach, maen gywilydd gen i orfod cyfaddef na wyddwn i ddim am fodolaeth John Griffith (Y Gohebydd). Fe gymerodd gyfrol Dylan Iorwerth i agor fy llygaid i hanes a gwaith un a fynnai fod angen wrth ddau beth i gael pwt o ohebiaeth yn gyntaf, stwff; ac yn ail, hamdden iw osod ynghyd. Gohebydd gyda Baner ac Amserau Cymru oedd John Griffith. Ac nid unrhyw ohebydd chwaith ond, yn hytrach, Y Gohebydd. Ac yn y gyfrol hon maer awdur yn gosod Y Gohebydd yng nghyd-destun Y Flwyddyn Fawr, sef 1868 ar etholiad yng Ngheredigion. John Griffith oedd y gohebydd proffesiynol cyntaf yn y Gymraeg, ai Lythyr o Lundain oedd conglfaen y Faner. Down i wybod bod y Gohebydd wedi cael ei eni yn y Bermo ddiwedd 1821, ei fam yn chwaer i Samuel Roberts Llanbryn-mair, hwnnw ei hun yn newyddiadurwr, ymhlith pethau eraill. Aeth John yn brentis i siop fferyllydd. Yna symudodd i weithio mewn warws ddillad yn Lerpwl yn 1840. Dioddefai o broblemaur ysgyfaint, a gwan iawn oedd ei iechyd. Symudodd i gadw siop yn Llangynog cyn mynd i Lundain i fod yn Is-ysgrifennydd i Hugh Owen yn ei Gymdeithas Addysgiadol Gymreig. Cadwai siop hefyd yn Walworth House. Yno y dechreuodd ar ei yrfa newyddiadurol, gan ddechrau ysgrifennu ir Cronicl. O fewn tair wythnos i hynny fei bachwyd gan Thomas Gee i fod yn Ohebydd yn Llundain, swydd a ddaliodd am ugain mlynedd. Hoffaf y frawddeg ddisgrifiadol hon ohono gan Y Parchedig D. Evans, Caerfyrddin: Yr oedd yn hollol amlwg ei fod wedi ei fwriadu gan Ragluniaeth i waith uwch na lapio te a phwyso siwgr. Ymhell cyn Etholiad 1868, roedd gan John Griffith gysylltiad agos Cheredigion. Ymwelain rheolaidd ag Aberystwyth. Ef hefyd oedd un o brif ysgogwyr y syniad o godi cofeb i Daniel Rowland yn Llangeitho. Cyn ac yn ystod yr ymgyrch etholiadol yn 1868, bur Gohebydd yn ymweld Cheredigion. Yn draddodiadol, etholiad oedd hwn, i bob pwrpas, rhwng criwr Trawsgoed a Nanteos ar un llaw a chriw Gogerddan ar y llall. Y ddau wrthwynebydd yn yr achos hwn oedd Henry Mallet Vaughan, Tori, a Mathew Richards, Rhyddfrydwr. Wrth yr ail yr hoeliodd Y Gohebydd ei liwiau. 'r gyfrol ni i faes y frwydr, y rhaniadau rhwng y tai mawr, anghydffurfiaeth ar eglwys. A ffefryn Y Gohebydd a orfu. Anodd crynhoi cynnwys y gyfrol hon, er nad yw hi ond 64 tudalen o hyd. Mae hin gyforiog o hanes y cyfnod, o Lundain i Geredigion ac i America. Cawn awyrgylch y cyfnod yn fyw iawn a chipolwg ar hanes gwr gwirioneddol bwysig yn ei faes. A da y gwnaeth Dylan Iorwerth gyfyngur hanes i etholiad cyffredinol a fun drobwynt yn hanes Ceredigion a Chymru gyfan. Lyn Ebenezer Gellir defnyddio'r adolygiad hwn at bwrpas hybu, ond gofynnir i chi gynnwys y gydnabyddiaeth ganlynol: Adolygiad oddi ar www.gwales.com, trwy ganiatd Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru.
