About the Book

A study of rural society in south Ceredigion through observation on the richness of language among the inhabitants. Three related essays discuss the social structure of south Ceredigion and its agricultural methods, and how this is reflected in the oral dialect of the community.

Review :
Yn y dosbarth Daearyddiaeth yn yr Ysgol Uwchradd y deuthum ar draws David Jenkins am y tro cyntaf. Cyfeiriwyd ni at lyfr or enw Welsh Rural Communities syn cynnwys dadansoddiad treiddgar o boblogaeth plwyf genedigol y cymdeithasegydd o Aberporth. Hyfryd felly, hanner canrif yn ddiweddarach, oedd cael cyfle i ailgyfarfod r myfyriwr ymchwil disglair hwnnw, a hynny o fewn cloriau cyfrol arall. Unwaith eto, gydag oes o brofiad wrth ei gefn erbyn hyn, cymdeithas ei filltir sgwr sydd o dan ei chwyddwydr. Mewn tair pennod swmpus sydd yn plethu iw gilydd dangosir yn feistrolgar a dysgedig fel y dylanwadodd tirwedd godre Ceredigion ar iaith, ar bobl ac ar ffordd o fywr trigolion dros y canrifoedd. Canlyniad naturiol y cydymdreiddio cyson a ddigwyddodd rhwng iaith a thir, chwedl yr Athro J. R. Jones, ywr gymdeithas frodorol, a chynnyrch y frwydr barhaus rhwng dyn r elfennau sydd yn gyfrifol am gyfoeth ymadroddion llafar hen yd y wlad. Pobl y pridd oeddynt a delweddau fferm a thyddyn a fyddain lliwior siarad. Nodir enghreifftiau lawer megis ceffyl blaen, mochyn deudwlc a dafad gorniog. Cofiaf innau hefyd glywed ffermwr, wrth wrthod ychwaneg o beth yfed, yn cyfeirio gyda chwithdod at y car a yrrwyd ganddo ir dafarn y noson honno fel caseg dywyll. Ymdrinnir yn ogystal r hierarchaeth a fodolai o fewn y gymdeithas amaethyddol a morwrol hon, ac fel y newidiodd y gair gwerin ei ystyr fwy nac unwaith ers yr Oesoedd Canol. Cyfeirir yn helaeth at weithiau Beirdd yr Uchelwyr gan ganolbwyntio ar gywydd enwog Dafydd Nanmor iw noddwyr, sef teulu Rhys ap Maredudd o fferm y Tywyn, ger y Ferwig. Maen werth nodi wrth fynd heibio fod yr hen draddodiad yn dal yn fyw yn y fro gan i Emyr Oernant, dros bedair canrif yn ddiweddarach, ganu cywydd o fawl i John Evans ai deulu am y lletygarwch a brofir yng Ngwestyr Emlyn, Tan-y-groes gan feirdd ein dyddiau ni. Yr un ywr mesur a ddefnyddiwyd, yr un hefyd ywr croeso ar diolch. Mae hon yn gyfrol iw thrysori. Fel y ddau Jones, y bardd Dic ar arlunydd Aneirin, llwyddodd yr academydd David Jenkins i roi inni ddarlun cofiadwy iawn or berthynas rhwng dyn i amgylchfyd yn y cornelyn bach hwn or byd. Idris Reynolds Gellir defnyddio'r adolygiad hwn at bwrpas hybu, ond gofynnir i chi gynnwys y gydnabyddiaeth ganlynol: Adolygiad oddi ar www.gwales.com, trwy ganiatd Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru.
