About the Book

From the beginning of time, high above the hidden valley, Snow Leopard has sung the stars to life, the sun to rise and the moon to wax and wane. She has woven words of protection to keep the hidden valley safe from the world and as she sings, a child lies dreaming the song down in the valley beneath. But time is passing, and Snow Leopard needs to find a singer who will follow her. But while she is searching, soldiers come looking for gold and slaves Jackie Morris's poetic text weaves the spirit of nature into a universal myth for our time, drawing threads of transformation into a children's story glistening with wonder. Set against the stunning landscapes of the Himalayas, her superlative illustrations of the nearly-extinct Snow Leopard offer a message of hope at a time when many of the world's wildest places are being worn away by human beings.

About the Author :
Jackie Morris lives in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with children, dogs and cats. Ever since leaving college, Bath Academy of Art, at least one cat has watched over her while she works. Big cats and small are a passion in her life, and it was while reading and watching her cat Pixie sleeping in winter that the idea for I am Cat came about. Among her many books for Frances Lincoln are The Ice Bear, The Snow Leopard, Tell me a Dragon , and How the Whale Became by Ted Hughes. To visit Jackie's website click here

Review :
The Snow Leopard combines her own story with vivid and beautiful full page paintings. Commitment to the protection of the natural world is implicit in the story, and the lyrical tone perfectly suits the creation of a new and appealing ecomyth. Books for Keeps The sumptuous watercolour illustrations carry this tale into the realm of the sublime, communicating the power of guardian beings and altruism in a remote world where spirit and nature merge. Although this is a children's book, it will primarily resonate with adults as it weaves its themes of shamanism, compassion and the beauty and power of the natural world. Light of Consciousness The story is told in a few poetic paragraphs set against visionary scenes in saturated colours. Commitment to the protection of the natural world is implicit in the story and the lyrical tone perfectly suits the creation of a new and appealing ecomyth. Books for Keeps 5 stars. One of our favourite books of the year. www.bettybookmark.co.uk You only have to look at the cover to see that Jackie Morris has created an extraordinary book here... Jackie has achieved a rare feat where the text is more than a match for her fantastic illustrations. An enchanting 'must' for every school. Scholastic Best Books of 2008 Jackie Morris's strength as an illustrator lies in her ability not only to capture the physical presence of an animal like the snow leopard, its movement, the texture of its pelt, the power of the muscles beneath the skin, so that you can almost see its breath in the cold air and smell its warmth - but also somehow to evoke the wonder that we humans can feel whenwe meet it, an awe that is intensified by the harsh remoteness of its habitat and the rarity of its appearances even there. Morris's best illustrations have a meditative quality. The story here accompanies and overlays them like a soft, lyrical chant, causing a sense of timelessness and peace, despite the moments of drama within the tale... A dreamlike contemplation of the mystery, beauty and implicit tension between the natural and the human worlds. Ibby Link A fine fable is created by Jackie Morris and her own stunningly lovely illustrations add to the beauty of the book. School Librarian
