Review :
Comprehensive book of calligraphy techniques from traditional to contemporary. Step by step instructions should mean that you can complete your projects with ease. Includes a choice of alphabets and many examples of work.-Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts The Encyclopaedia series was a winning format when it first appeared and one that has stood the test of time well, setting the standard for design-led instruction books where each spread is an entity in its own right. Several of the volumes have been revamped and, although I can't see any evidence that this one is more than a straight reissue, it retains a fresh and inviting feel. There are two distinct sections, Techniques and Themes and the combination of what to do and what to do with it is pretty much unique, most calligraphy books going for just one or the other. Techniques covers all the things you'd expect, from basic penmanship to letterforms in Carolingian, Copperplate, Italic, etc. Diana also includes extras such as gilding, the use of quill pens and ornamentation. In Themes, she gives extensive examples of the sort of work you can produce, with illustrations from a variety of contemporary practitioners. There is a limited amount of detail here, so this is more a gallery than a series of projects, but the extended captions and chapter introductions go a long way towards giving you ideas to work on. If you want what is effectively two books in one, you'll get excellent value for money.-Artbookreview.net This is undoubtedly an essential reference book for anyone interested in art, calligraphy or graphic design. It covers absolutely everything related to Calligraphy showing how to obtain all kinds of interesting effects and techniques. From gilding to borders, using raised gold, found objects and brush lettering - the scope for creating unusual effects is much greater than anyone might realize. All the basic techniques are covered in considerable detail, followed by sections dealing with tools, equipment, experimental techniques and applied calligraphy. An interesting section deals with the Third Dimension - using calligraphy on stone, slate, glass and wood. Explanations showing how this can be done are linked to background information highlighting its development as an art form, and how to modify lettering styles to suit such three dimensional objects. The book is well illustrated, with lots of pictures showing different types of letters and the final effects that can be reached. An inspiring book, which also acts as a good source of basic information.-monstersandcritics.com Here's an indispensable book for aspiring calligraphers of all levels of expertise.
