Review :
Oct 09 Make your own Christmas cards this year, and at the same time stitch some initials to personalize birthday cards, or anything else! Here is another lovely little book full of beautiful designs to stitch during those dark evenings. Despite being rather an odd combination, the whole alphabet and various card designs are all attractive, and yes I am already stitching some designs from it. Choose from frames to surround those paper tole images, or frames containing further stitched designs depicting popular subjects such as pinecones, bells and candles. Or perhaps you might prefer something more unusual, such as the innovative idea of having a Christmas tree as a frame, containing a nativity scene or still life arrangement. Then there are ideas for using up odd beads and ways of employing embossing stencils to enchance your cards. The alphabet features summer flowers and ways of making it look Christmassy without radical changes have so far eluded me, but for the rest of the year it will be a useful addition to any papercrafter's library of designs. I also see it being transferred via carbon paper to cloth, and being stitched as monograms on towels and face flannels so a versatile idea. There are instructions on how to work the various simple stitches, tips on making the work look better and basics for beginners as well as how to make the individual cards. This is not gone into in much detail, but looking at the pictures will tell all but the greenest crafting tyro how it is done, and if you cannot obtain all the items used (not easy outside Holland) other alternatives will surely suggest themselves. One for my keeper shelf. Oct 09 Make your own Christmas cards this year, and at the same time stitch some initials to personalize birthday cards, or anything else! One for my keeper shelf. Jan 2010 I have enjoyed reading Embroidery on Paper: Alphabet and Festive Motifs. I enjoy adding stitching to paper and I can see how these templates would create great looking additions to cards. Obviously, I read the book as a rubber stamper, so I was imagining how I could add rubber stamps to these designs, however every design has been created as a standalone project. The main potential drawback of the book is the odd mix of designs. Someone seeking festive designs may find the addition of a floral alphabet at odds with their plans and someone seeking a set of floral alphabet templates may find the festive designs incongruous. That aside, the mix of good quality templates, photographs of completed projects and basic technique information makes Embroidery on Paper: Alphabet and Festive Motifs a good addition to a crafter's bookshelf. A complete stitching novice may require more information to help them get started, however there are plenty of excellent books available. Feb 10 Embroidery on Paper: Alphabet & Festive Motifs comes from authors who have used traditional embroidery on paper techniques to produce a fine collection of alphabet letters and motifs that can be used to create personalized greeting cards and more. Templates for all the designs are included in a fine presentation for any needlework collection. Summer 10 I am sure cardmakers will like this book – the designs are simple by effective and didn't take an age to complete. The layout and instructions are easy to follow. New to this type of embroidery, I completed a letter of the alphabet and a Christmas design quickly. Excellent when you need a card in a hurry. (Pat Helson)
