About the Book

It is vital that social workers have a deep and critical understanding of the social work value-base, and are able to analyse and apply values and ethics to their everyday practice. This fully-revised edition of one of our best-selling titles identifies current issues in social work and then applies an ethical dimension. These issues are then investigated further within an anti-discriminatory framework and against the background of the code of practice for social care workers and employers. Traditional value perspectives are clearly explained and current developments in virtue theory and the ethics of care for social work are also introduced.

Table of Contents:

Review :
"Excellent text - ties principles to the national standards well. Easy to use and invaluable." - Lecturer, Liverpool Hope University The book gives a good introduction to ′Vlaues and Ethics′. I liked the accessible way that philosophy was given concrete meaning through examples of life like situations.
I found this an enjoyable read and a valuable aid when considering student learning. Clear and accessible with National Occupational Standards identified. Good group of values and ethics praised as part of the Social Work vision. A highly recommended book. Presentation very clear and language easy to understand, each chapter clearly linked to core social work values and the key notes/requirements of BSW degree. Already recommended and will do so for the next group. A very interactive book. The chapter on anti-oppressive practice is the one in particular that I have recommended for supplemental reading. On the whole a well wrriten book which will have appeal for Stage 1 students This is a very clear introduction to ethics and values for all social work students. I strongly recommend this book as a starting point for considering moral philosophy in social work practice. Excellent book with lots of case studies and useful diagrams for students. Very well presented with all the appropriate knowledge for those entering the profession. Have recommeded to students undertaking Ethical Dilemmas & Decision Making, and, from feedback, theyare using it for their assignment. Very accessible to those who have not approach the subject within an academic context before. The significant strength of this book is its broad coverage of both values and ethics, from AOP to Philosophical approaches, and principles. The language and format makes this complex subject accssible to a broad group of students. This is an excellent book. It gives a logical approach to understanding where values come from and the ethical issues we may face in applying them. The application to practice is also excellent including use of scenarios and activities. It also looks at major social work rules and implementation in practice E.g. Risk situations, advocacy This is a very useful text for social work students.
It covers key areas in the subject for the social work degree and I find the exercises provide thought provoking case scenarios for students and practitioners.
I thought it provided a really useful context for social work values and anti-oppressive practice and will be recommending this text to my students for their social work degree study. Another good book, not limited in its value to PQ programmes. Useful as supplementary reading for experienced students as part of reading for the Values and Difference module. fabulous text easily accessible for students will be reommeding this as one for the student reading list next semester Accessible and clear. Good exercises and case studies with full comment to follow. A good introduction into the world of values and ethics. Easy to understand and help students to relate to their own aims and values. Parrott, as always, has produced a text which is readable, relevant and interesting. This is a recommended text for the BA (Hons) Social Work degree. a well written text which will help students to critically reflect on their developing personal and professional social work value base-both prior to and during practice placements Useful update to previous edition
