About the Book

Kenny Rodgers comes from a family of thirteen; he has five brothers and five sisters. He is married to Nancy and has two sons, Gary and Greg. He is the third son of a first son, but his position in the Rodgers family gives him no magical insight or foresight to life. These are his memoirs and memories of his life and 'the family'. They are not 'kiss and tell' or 'tittle-tattle' - they are real, at times raw, relevant and readable experiences of life and death over fifty years. His memoirs are Scottish but the truths and emotions are universal. The book reflects childhood in a bygone age of the 1960s and 70s; Scottish culture; education; sport; rural, town and city life. It recalls briefly the words and the works of the National Bard (Robert Burns) and the words and deeds of modern day bigots and alcoholics. It recounts the real local characters of the day and recognises courage in the face of the deaths of friends and family from still-birth; teenage cancer; 'toxic shock'; a subarachnoid haemorrhage; cancer in maturity; suspected SARS and mercifully 'old age'. The book weaves through the challenge of change in life and work and captures the disappearance of the Picture House and the appearance of the Complexes; the demise of the Co-operatives and the birth of the multiples; the death-knell of board games and the discovery of the skaters and Skateboarders and the degeneration of politics and the regeneration of community spirit and consciousness. Kenny's reflections cover all manner of life and tragic death; it ranges from the humorous to the harrowing; it makes you realise that in 'ordinary' people we can unearth the 'extra-ordinary'. You will 'know' someone in Kenny's book and you may even recognise 'yourself'. As the story matures it will force you to run your own gauntlet of emotions from juvenile laughter; adolescent adoration; loyalty and love; loathing and hate; desolation and despair and renewed determination, spirit and hope.
