About the Book

Following his award-winning "Jaguar E-type: Portrait of a Design Icon", Glen Smale turns his attention to Ferrari and surely some of the most iconic and beautiful automotive designs ever created. Taking a new angle on a hugely popular subject, the author includes commentary from design pundits and Ferrari stylists past and present to give new insight into the design of Ferrari's road cars throughout the company's history. Photographs and styling drawings feature heavily throughout the book, making it essential reading for anyone interested in Ferrari, sports cars, or car design in general.

Table of Contents:
Cars of the 1940s and 1950s, including 250GT and SWB - designs by Scaglietti and Bertone, the start of the true modern-day sports coupe. Cars of the 1960s, including the Bizzarrini-designed 250GTO - one of the most revered sports car designs of all time - and the influence of Pinin Farina. Cars of the 1970s, including Dino - the first in a long line of mid-engined designs. Cars of the 1980s, including Testarossa and F40, and an explanation of different body styles - Barchetta, Spider, Berlinetta, coupe, touring and grand touring. Cars of the 1990s: mid-mounted engines and the return to front-engine models, including 456, 550 Maranello, F355 and 360 Modena. Cars of the 2000s: continued growth of front-engine models - 612 Scaglietti, Superamerica, F599 Fiorano - and the mid-engine Enzo supercar and F430 series.

Review :
" Live the dream with Glen Smale s new book, Ferrari Design: The Definitive Study. It covers the whole Ferrari oeuvre, but we adore the older models." - Playboy Magazine "Smale ought to get an attaboy for taking this book beyond the traditional limit of historic coachwork and into the realm of today's line-built Ferrari, with essentially fixed-design bodywork under the Fiat/di Montezemolo regime." - Hemming's Motor News "What makes a Ferrari a Ferrari? That's an intriguing question, one worth a far more thoughtful discussion than what's offered in "Ferrari Design." Nicely photographed and pleasingly presented, the book's nine chapters begin with the history of Enzo Ferrari as a racecar driver and end with the latest Ferrari models. Rather than guide us through the tumultuous behind-the-scenes activities at Ferrari since its founding in 1947, Mr. Smale presents each new model as a fait accompli rather than a product of intense internal wrangling." - New York Times "Smale's book is interesting in a different way - it's a proper, in depth analysis of why and how Ferrari have made some of the best looking cars on the planet. Refreshingly, it's also written in a chatty, approachable style." - Topgear.com "Pictured here is a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO/64, one of the lesser-known beauties featured in Glen Smale s amazing new book Ferrari Design: The Definitive Study. Not nearly as renowned as its predecessor the legendary 250 GTO, the shorter and wider interim model GTO/64 was never intended for road use. A 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO/64 from Glen Smale s amazing new book Ferrari Design: The Definitive Study This is just one of 275 eye-popping images in the voluptuous volume from Haynes Publishing / Motorbooks, the ultimate work on Ferrari design. In addition to the eye candy the author includes commentary from design pundits and Ferrari stylists past and present. So step on the gas and get your ass to the bookstore, now." - Urbandaddy.com "The book goes to considerable length and depth in discussing the evolution of bodywork from every major and obscure house of styling that worked on Enzo's stuff. Not only that, but Smale also takes the reader into the world of today;s Ferrari styling and body construction, a topic that's been given scant notice to this point. Very nice job." - Hemming's Sports & Exotic Car" " Live the dream with Glen Smale's new book, Ferrari Design: The Definitive Study."
