About the Book

Colonel Nassar of Egypt was about to nationalise the Suez Canal. Invasion of Egypt by the French and British to protect their joint interests with the collusion of Israel seemed imminent. With feverish haste, warships were being bought out of mothballs and prepared for sea. One such destroyer, HMS Jutland, with her advance crew on board was soon to have her harmony disrupted by the arrival of the First Lieutenant, a sadistic pompous officer by the name of Jenks-Powell. His vendetta against the lower-deck seamen becomes an obsession, with most of his vehemence directed against Shiner, a tough aggressive sailor who broods and awaits his revenge. Sea and gunnery trials complete, HMS Jutland sails to join the 7th Destroyer Squadron as part of the vast armada bound for Egypt. The brief and explosive action in Suez is followed by a humiliating withdrawal. Homeward bound, the 7th Destroyer Squadron visits Civitavecchia in Italy for shore leave. Brawling in Rome and Civitavecchia brings the courtesy visit to an abrupt and premature end. Back in England two weeks into their eight weeks leave, Jock, Shiner and Lofty find London with its many delights a serious drain on their fast dwindling resources. A chance advert in 'Soldier Magazine' which read, 'Personnel required immediately to service 20mm and 40mm weapons, GBP300 per week, duration of employment, 14 days'. After a meeting with a Mr Kumbo, the three sailors find themselves flying to Bolobo in Africa. Colonel Kossanto, the corrupt and treacherous Officer of Katanga Army, abandons them at Bolobo airport as the frenzied rebel Simba forces advance. They are compelled to join Major Lindle, Commander of the Mercenaries, as they prepare to defend Bolobo against overwhelming odds. The tragic and bitter fighting that follows ends with the intervention of the Belgian Paratroopers to protect their nationals in Bolobo.
