About the Book

The Welsh language, traditional costume, the fiery Welsh dragon, jibes about sheep and passionate rugby fans all mark Wales's individuality, distinguishing it from the other countries in the UK. An insider's look at life in modern-day Wales.

About the Author :
Fflur Dafydd won the Prose Medal for Literature at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in 1999 and became the first holder of the R S Thomas scholarship. She graduated from the University of Wales Aberystwyth and later gained an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. As well as writing, she is also a musician.

Review :
This is one of a series of glossy forty-page booklets on various aspects of Welsh life. Gomer have commissioned a different author for each publication and celebrities contribute a brief introduction. Fflur Dafydd covers predictable ground here – the harp, the eisteddfod, the red dragon, chapels, coal mines, mountains, St David and the Millennium Centre being among the iconic subjects dealt with. There are some passages of what can only be described as purple prose here as when the author writes that on St David’s Day ‘ . . . in chapel vestries all around the country people can be heard sloshing their spoons in their annual serving of Cawl . . . ’ On entering a Welsh chapel the author detected the ‘strangely enticing smell of religious fervour'. But I don’t want to appear too negative, for I am sure the book will do well in the tourist market. Many readers will be intrigued as I was to learn that the 1968 screen classic Barbarella was partly filmed in Llanfair P.G., which just goes to prove that in our small country the unexpected awaits us around every corner.
