Review :
Jig-so o ddyn oedd Dyfnallt Morgan i'r rhai a’i hadwaenai fel cymeriad yn y pellter canol, megis. Caem wybod ei hanes fesul darn digyswllt, a’r gamp oedd gosod y darnau hynny yn eu lle. O’m rhan i, gwyddwn yn fras am ei fagu yng nghyffiniau Merthyr (ni chollodd na’r acen na’r ‘achan’, erioed), am ryw gyfnod amhenodol yn Tsieina, am ei gyswllt â’r BBC. Dysgais, wrth ddarllen un o ddramâu Pirandello mewn dosbarth dan ei ofal ym Mangor, am ei wybodaeth o Eidaleg. Ar ben hynny, roeddwn wedi pori yn ei ymdriniaeth â juvenilia T. H. Parry-Williams, Rhyw Hanner Ieuenctid, wedi gweld ei enw droeon yng Nghyfansoddiadau a Beirniadaethau’r Eisteddfod. Roedd yn rhan o ddodrefn Bangor Uchaf yn ystod fy nyddiau coleg (ac wedi hynny), yn cerdded yn benderfynol ar hyd Ffordd Garth Uchaf i'r Adran Efrydiau Allanol yn Ffordd y Coleg: mwstás camarweiniol o filwrol yr olwg, gwên, llygaid byw, ambarél, cyfarchiad i bawb. Diolch, felly, i’w fab Tomos am osod y darnau hyn a llawer darn difyr arall yn eu lle ac am gyflwyno inni, yng ngeiriau ei dad, ddilyniant yr hanes diddorol ac amrywiol hwnnw. Drwy olygu destlus ac ambell air o esboniad, llwyddodd y mab i ateb cwestiynau na wyddwn sut i'w geirio. Y darnau newydd sy’n glynu yn y cof, er hynny: teithio ar gefn beic bob cam o Benydarren i Aberystwyth, dysgu wrth draed Gwenallt, gwrthwynebydd cydwybodol yn herio’r drefn fel labrwr a gweithiwr ysbyty a gyrrwr ambiwlans. Mae Tomos yn neilltuo'r bumed bennod i drafod helynt pryddest 1953, stori na wyddwn fawr amdani, mwya’r cywilydd imi. Ymlaen wedyn i sôn am ddarlledu yn Gymraeg yn nyddiau’r rhaglenni byw, di-ail-gynnig a’r chwilio am iaith lafar addas i’r Gymru ranedig. Wedi siom y Rhyl yn 1953, buddugoliaeth wedyn ar y bryddest yn Sir Fôn bedair blynedd yn ddiweddarach, gyda’r darlun bythgofiadwy o’r dyn a oedd i gyf-weld y bardd buddugol yn gorfod cadw cyfrinach rhag ei gydweithwyr. Ac yna’r Dyfnallt a gofiaf, yn ddarlithydd coleg am ugain mlynedd olaf ei fywyd gwaith. Rhaid diolch i'r mab, hefyd, am gasglu cerddi ac ysgrifau gwasgaredig ei dad at ei gilydd ar ddiwedd y gyfrol: gwaith y gallwn ei ddarllen gyda llygaid newydd, wedi darllen amgylchiadau eu creu. Bywyd a gwaith sydd yma, felly, ond wedi ei hydreiddio â chynhesrwydd sy’n llawer mwy na chymwynas.
