About the Book

A Welsh adaptation of Out of the Ashes, a very sensitive portrayal of one family's reaction to the nightmare of living through the 2001 foot and mouth crisis on their farm, written in the form of the diary of the family's 13 year-old daughter; for 9-11 year-old readers. 35 black-and-white sketches.

Review :
Ydych chi’n cadw dyddiadur? Mae’n rhaid i mi gyfaddef fy mod i wedi cadw dyddiadur bob blwyddyn pan oeddwn yn blentyn – am wythnos gyfan weithiau. Yn ffodus, mae ’na rai sy’n cadw at eu gair (neu at eu dyddiadur) yn well na fi, ac un o’r rheiny yw Beca Morus, ‘awdures’ y dyddiadur hwn, dyddiadur lledr y cawsai’n anrheg pen-blwydd yn dair ar ddeg oed gan ei thad. Mae ’na rywbeth braf mewn darllen dyddiadur rhywun arall; plannu’n trwyn hir rhwng y tudalennau, llyncu’r profiadau, bodio’r geiriau a theimlo’r teimladau – ie, yn sicr, teimlo’r teimladau. Yr hyn a’m trawodd i’n syth am Beca Morus oedd ei bod yn mwynhau’i bywyd, ei bod yn wirioneddol hapus. Mae hi’n perthyn i deulu agos iawn; ei mam a’i thad, Glain y ceffyl, Caradog y tarw, Briallen y fuwch, Jini’r hwch, Bobs y ci a Josh bach yr oen llywaeth. Maen nhw i gyd yn mwynhau’u bywyd ar y fferm – maen nhw’n wirioneddol hapus. O oes, mae ’na ambell achos gan Beca i gwyno (wel, mae hi’n ei harddegau rŵan, tydi?) a Mam druan sy’n ei chael hi am bregethu bod gwaith ysgol yn bwysicach na gwaith fferm. Ond, yn ffodus, mae gweddill y teulu’n anghytuno. Ac felly mae’r flwyddyn 2001, fel Glain y ceffyl, yn trotian yn ei blaen yn ddigon hapus ei byd; mae Beca’n brysur iawn rhwng gofalu am y teulu, yr wyna a phlesio’i hathrawes Saesneg newydd, Mrs Merton. Mae hi’n mwynhau’r cyfan. Ond mae hynny i gyd yn newid ar ddydd Sadwrn, Chwefror y pedwerydd ar hugain. Mae Beca’n cyrraedd adref ac yn sylweddoli’n syth fod rhywbeth o’i le: “Pan es i mewn i’r lolfa roedd Dad a Mam yn eistedd yn syllu ar sgrin wag y teledu. Wnaeth yr un o’r ddau hyd yn oed droi i edrych arna i . . . Gofynnais beth oedd yn bod. Dywedodd Dad yn dawel iawn: ‘Clwy’r traed a’r genau.’” Clwy’r traed a’r genau. Geiriau yr ydym i gyd yn gyfarwydd â hwy: geiriau a glywsom ar y radio; eu gweld ar y teledu; geiriau y gwnaeth rhai ohonom eu blasu ym mwg y llosgi. Geiriau dieithr i Beca, wrth gwrs, ond geiriau y mae’n rhy fuan o’r hanner yn dod i sylweddoli eu harwyddocâd ar ei bywyd hi – ac ar fywyd ei theulu. Dydi cwyno am Mam ddim yn bwysig bellach wrth i’r Clwy garlamu fel Red Rum tuag atynt, yn nes ac yn nes . . . "Chwefror 28ain . . . Roedd lluniau ar y teledu heddiw o foch wedi marw yn cael eu codi gan beiriannau a’u rhoi ar ben coelcerth anferth . . . Mawrth 1af . . . Wrth fynd ar y bws i’r ysgol dwi wedi gweld nifer o ffermydd â matiau gwellt diheintio ar draws eu giatiau, ac mae mwy a mwy o arwyddion ‘Dim Mynediad’ i’w gweld . . . Mawrth 5ed . . . Maen nhw wedi cael hyd i arwyddion o glwy’r traed a’r genau ar fferm lai na dwy filltir i ffwrdd . . ." Na. Allai’r ceffyl cyflymaf yn y byd ddim dianc rhag yr anhepgor, ac mi fentraf i ddweud na all y plentyn caletaf ddarllen cofnod tyngedfennol Mawrth y deuddegfed drwy ddwy lygad sych. Mae bywyd Beca a’i theulu’n sydyn iawn yn un trist, gwirioneddol drist. Mor ddirdynnol yw’r darlun sensitif o effaith y clwy ar y tad – roedd darllen amdano’n siarad â Charadog y tarw am y tro olaf yn unigrwydd y sied wair a’r nos yn brofiad tebyg i yrru car a’r weipars ’di torri. Ac mae’r arddull syml, ddidwyll yn ein hatgoffa’n gyson poenus mai plentyn sy’n siarad, plentyn a oedd fis yng nghynt yn wirioneddol hapus. Mae’r dyddiadur yn gorffen ar Ebrill y degfed ar hugain, 2001, a Beca druan eisoes wedi treulio blwyddyn hiraf ei bywyd. Blwyddyn fwyaf trist ei bywyd. Ond fel y dêl y gwanwyn yn ôl i’r tir – hyd yn oed ar ôl y gaeaf garwaf – daw gobaith yn ôl drwy’r lludw ac yn ôl i lais y tad wrth iddo ganu ‘Bugail Aberdyfi’ ar ei dractor. Mae O’r Lludw yn perthyn i gyfres lwyddiannus Corryn ac mae hynny’n briodol gan mai o safbwynt plentyn y’i hysgrifennwyd. Ond peidied neb â meddwl mai nofel i blant cefn gwlad yn unig yw hi – mae colli teulu yn thema gryfach na byd amaeth yma. Peidied neb â meddwl chwaith mai nofel i blant yn unig ydyw; mae’n nofel i bawb a gafodd eu heffeithio gan y Clwy, a byddwn i’n dadlau bod pawb a welodd y lluniau o’r llosgi – hyd yn oed o glydwch canol dinas – wedi cael eu heffeithio ganddo.
