About the Book

A novel relating the fictitious account of Siôn Trefnant, Bishop of Hereford (1389-1404), as he recalls incidents in his life and does much soul-searching while he lies on his deathbed.

Review :
Ar yr olwg gyntaf, y mae’n anodd dychmygu sut yn y byd y gall hanes esgob canoloesol apelio at y darllenydd cyffredin ar ddechrau’r unfed ganrif ar hugain. Gellid dadlau, er enghraifft, fod y bennod agoriadol fel clytwaith o draethodau hanes chweched dosbarth wedi ei ailbobi, gan ei fod yn cynnwys manylion a ffeithiau pur arwynebol ac nad yw’n goglais dychymyg y darllenydd nofelau sydd am fynd dan groen cymeriadau. Dyfynnir yn Lladin yn bur helaeth a cheir talpiau o farddoniaeth ganoloesol yma ac acw, nad yw’n ychwanegu llawer at ddatblygiad y stori. Trafodir hefyd athrawiaeth traws-sylweddeliad, yn ôl syniadaeth Wycliffe, sef un o ddiwinyddion mawr ei ddydd er ei fod bellach yn bur anghyfarwydd i lawer. Fodd bynnag, nid yw’r disgrifiad moel hwn yn gwneud cyfiawnder â chynnwys y nofel esoterig hon. Yn y lle cyntaf, y mae’n rhaid cofio mai Siôn Trefnant, Esgob Henffordd rhwng y blynyddoedd terfysglyd 1389 a 1404, sef blynyddoedd tyngedfennol yn hanes Cymru, yw canolbwynt y naratif. O safbwynt hanes a gwleidyddiaeth Gymreig, felly, dylai’r fath gefndir apelio at y Cymro neu’r Gymraes wladgarol. O ran dulliau’r nofel, defnyddir techneg gyfarwydd i gyflwyno’r stori, sef llais y prif gymeriad yn bwrw ei fola o’i wely angau. Mewn gwirionedd, math o gyffesgell (yn null Stryd y Glep, Kate Roberts) i Siôn Trefnant yw’r nofel hon drwyddi draw, a datgan yr hyn na fedrai ei ddatgan gerbron yr un esgob a geir ynddi. Yn ôl safonau’r oes hon daw hi’n amlwg yn fuan iawn yn ystod y cyffesu mai gwrthryfelwr yw Siôn Trefnant. Ond gwrthryfelwr tawel ydyw hefyd: y math o wrthryfelwr sydd yn llawn o gymhlethdodau a gwendidau ac anghysondebau, hynny yw, y mae’n wrthryfelwr dynol iawn ac anodd yw peidio â chydymdeimlo ag ef. O bryd i’w gilydd, teimlai’n rhwystredig: “A wawriai’r dydd byth pan gâi esgob weiddi ar bennau’r tai ei fod yn Gymro, ei fod yn credu mewn rhyddid cydwybod, a’i fod hefyd yn dad balch?” Er ei fod yn ddeiliad un o swyddi uchaf yr Eglwys, cydiai ambell blwc o ansicrwydd ynddo. Fel y cyfaddefa wrth un o’i gyfeillion yn Ffrainc: “Fy nhad drefnodd y ddihangfa gyntaf imi – dianc i ysgol Llanelwy rhag y posibilrwydd o ormes a thlodi a rhyfel. Dianc wedyn i Rydychen, rhag gorfod wynebu fy nghyfrifoldebau yng Nghymru – dianc i chwilio am hawddfyd. A dianc o Rydychen rhag gorfod amddiffyn safbwyntiau crefyddol sy’n rhy newydd i’r Eglwys.” Ar ôl cael ei ordeinio’n Esgob Henffordd, sylweddola yr hyn y mae’r Eglwys wedi ei wneud iddo: “Rydw i wedi hen arfer erbyn hyn, Siôn Trefor, â gwneud yn groes i’m cydwybod. Mae’r Eglwys yn gwneud hynny iti. Beth ydym ni’n galw’r peth? Moeseg Gristnogol? Chwilio am esgus Cristnogol dros wneud rhywbeth nad yw’n iawn.” Er hynny, nid sinig yw Siôn Trefnant gan ei fod yn brwydro beunydd beunos â’i gydwybod, yn cicio yn erbyn y tresi yn ddistaw bach ac, o’r herwydd, cymeriad truenus sydd yn haeddu ein tosturi ydyw ef. Gan hynny, nid buchedd ganoloesol yw Dydd Oedd a Diwedd Iddo ond darlun o gyflwr mewnol gwrtharwr modern iawn.
