About the Author :
Veronika Bennholdt-Thomsen is director of the Institute of Theory and Practice of Subsistence (ITPS) at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. Her publications include work on women's studies, peasant studies, social anthropology and the matriarchal community of Juchitan, Mexico. Nicholas Faraclas is a senior lecturer in linguistics at the University of Papua New Guinea. He is involved in community-based literacy activities in Latin America, Africa and the South Pacific, and works with indigenous organizations in Papua New Guinea, the Soloman Islands, Vanuatu, West Papua, Bougainville and Kanaky (New Caledonia). Claudia von Werlhof is professor at the Institute of Political Sciences, University of Innsbruck, Austria. When lecturing at the University of Bielefeld she undertook field research in Central America and Venezuela on the international division of labour, women, underdevelopment and agriculture.
