About the Book

Mention Nottingham and most people think of the wicked sheriff safely tucked away in his castle while Robin Hood and his Merry Men roam the surrounding forest, robbing the rich to give to the poor! While the original medieval castle has long gone, the walls and gatehouse remain, topping the tall sandstone cliffs which are such a feature of the city. The castle stands on one hill and the parish church of St Mary on another, close to the unique area known as the Lace Market. This consists of amazing Victorian brick warehouses built by the wealthy lace manufacturers to impress their customers, and from which they despatched lace products across the world. In the centre of the city is the open space of the Old Market Square and the impressive Council House with its domed roof. Radiating from this are the streets which make up the retail heart of the city and lead to the modern shopping malls of Victoria Centre and Broad Marsh. Today, as this revealing portrait by Peter and Janet Roworth shows, Nottingham is not just a thriving city and university town. It is also an important cultural and sporting centre, with theatres, a concert hall, ice arena, football stadiums, the famous Trent Bridge cricket ground and at Holme Pierrepont, the huge lake of the National Water Sports Centre.

About the Author :
Janet's photography developed from her interest in local history and architecture. Peter has worked in conservation for over 30 years and is currently employed by English Nature as Site Manager for the Lower Derwent National Nature Reserve. Their work has featured in numerous publications, including Portrait of Lincoln and Moods of Lincolnshire, also published by Halsgrove.
