About the Book

Smart grids enable efficient integration of rising shares of distributed and intermittent renewable power generation at various scales, and variable loads, for example from electric vehicles. This requires sophisticated communication and computation, as well as monitoring and protection from both malfunctions and malicious interference. Control, Communication, Monitoring and Protection of Smart Grids summarises recent developments in the field. It begins by reviewing the principles of smart grids and microgrids, and their relation to renewables and power electronics. Ensuing chapters deal with renewable energy integration in smart grids, adaptive control, reinforcement learning, advanced and robust control, bi-directional virtual inertia, fault direction identification, smart grid protection, cyber-power grid monitoring, condition monitoring and health prognosis, and PV integrated EV charging in V2G/G2V operation. A final chapter brings together case studies from various countries. This book offers a series of broad of perspectives on important questions in the field of smart grids and their control, for researchers involved with power grids, as well as those in electrical and computer engineering in the power industry.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1: Introduction to smart grids and microgrids Chapter 2: Renewable energy system integration in smart grids Chapter 3: Adaptive control schemes for AC microgrid Chapter 4: Reinforcement learning-based inter-area damping controller considering communication channel latency and actuator saturation Chapter 5: Application of advanced and robust control schemes with cyber resiliency in microgrid network Chapter 6: Bidirectional virtual inertia through decentralized virtual synchronous generator control in hybrid AC-DC microgrids Chapter 7: Power quality issues in microgrids Chapter 8: Advanced fault direction identification strategy for AC microgrid protection Chapter 9: Communication and computations for smart grid protection Chapter 10: Holonic architecture for cyber-power distribution grid monitoring and operation Chapter 11: Condition monitoring and health prognosis applications in smart grids Chapter 12: Power electronics in a PV-integrated grid-connected electric vehicle charging system for V2G/G2V operation Chapter 13: Smart grid scenarios of different countries
