About the Book

Boss is sleeping, Norma is busy, Spike is stressed and Sam is getting the wrong messages. If only Sam knew how to wake Boss up.... What A Muddle is an interactive, practical workbook designed to help children who have difficulties with emotional regulation to begin to understand what is happening in their bodies. A variety of activities throughout the book enable the child to start to explore these ideas through the story of Sam, while gently encouraging them to begin to verbalise their own experiences. Carrying out the physical exercises in the book can promote changes in emotional regulation. The workbook also provides plenty of opportunity to introduce and promote the child's feelings of confidence and self-worth. The content of What A Muddle was inspired by children in therapy; the methods promoted in the book are tried and tested and easy to work into a child's everyday life, with support from their caregivers. The text is written in a child-friendly, gender-neutral style, and is easy to understand and user-friendly for parents, carers and practitioners alike. For children aged 4-12.

About the Author :
Jess qualified as a Therapeutic Counsellor in 2014. She has experience working with high-risk adults and children who have witnessed or been subjected to extremely violent and complex situations and has focussed her continuing professional development around the effects of trauma, with the impact of abuse becoming her specialist area. Jess has been trained to facilitate the Just What We Need therapeutic programme which was developed locally to support the emotional needs of parents and is now a national project. Most recently, Jess has founded The Gap (Bedfordshire) CIC; the first specialist therapeutic trauma provision for children in Bedfordshire. Jess is also the director of JV Trauma Tools and Training, which provides specialist training, products and ideas for anyone who is affected by the impact of trauma. Renée has been a child therapist for over three decades, initially working with children who displayed emotional and behavioral problems at home and/or school. In 1994 Renée started to work with traumatised children and very quickly found herself in need of more information. The journey to understand the impact that trauma has on the brain of the child, and how to enable the child to recover, started in January 1998 and appears to be a never-ending process with increasing research being released. Presently Renée is the clinical lead at Integrate Families, National Centre for Child Trauma and Dissociation in England. Renée specialises in children with complex trauma and dissociation, living in adoptive and foster families. She provides therapy to children and families on a weekly basis as well as consultation and supervision to therapists. Renée is also an international trainer on attachment, trauma, emotional regulation and dissociation in children and adolescents.

Review :
"...it is designed with real children in mind. It is concrete, fun to complete, creative and so accessible for children to work through independently or with a trusted adult." "Extremely versatile book. Complexity of how the brain works put into a simplified language so even the youngest of children can understand." "As a therapist I have used this book with many of the children and young people I work with, and each time it has proved a productive base to work from in order to create change." "Highly recommended for therapists or parents of a traumatised child." "This is an amazing book to educate children about their brain and the muddles they have due to trauma. I use this book with every child I work with. Every child so far has completely understood the concept. I recommend this book to every professional working with children who have experienced trauma."
