About the Book

The human body is designed to move naturally and freely, without forced tension or conscious effort. But modern life is full of factors that push people out of sync with their bodies' natural balance. Based on the pioneering work of Frederick Matthias Alexander, this book shows movement professionals how to use the Alexander Technique to free up clients' movement and reduce pain caused by unbalanced posture. Each exercise demonstrates how to become conscious of any bad postural habits that have developed over time, and allows you to bring your clients or yourself back into alignment. An essential guide for somatic practitioners, manual therapists, movement and health professionals, and anyone who wants to reduce or avoid joint pain.

About the Author :
Richard Brennan has been teaching the Alexander technique for over 35 years. He travels extensively giving workshops, talks and interviews, including many universities in Europe and the U.S. Richard has written nine books which have been translated into 22 languages. Richard lives in Galway, Ireland where he has been the director of the Alexander Teacher Training College, Ireland since 1998. He is also the President and co-founder of the Irish Society of Alexander Technique Teachers (ISSAT).

Review :
Brennan relates two parallel journeys of self-help into back care and wellbeing , F.M. Alexander's and his own, inviting us to join them through a series of compelling common-sense examples, references and illustrations. The reader is left little option but to accept the invitation. In a unique departure from short-term dependence on remedial approaches to relieving pain, Brennan combines decades of teaching with scientific evidence in outlining an effortless and empowering method for promoting lifelong mind-body harmony - each page, a practical gemstone for discovery! In layman's terms, Richard Brennan explains the Alexander Technique and how it can benefit people whose ailments are exacerbated by detrimental postural habits. This easy to read book is a useful resource for healthcare professionals and their patients who are looking to improve comfort, balance, breathing, mobility, and emotional well-being through a practical, long-lasting, and empowering supplement to medical treatment. The Alexander Technique is excellent and has helped me to manage sciatica and shoulder problems related to a busy deskbound job, and encourages me to be more mindful in everyday movement. An unexpected plus has been helping my singing and speaking voice, by giving my lungs more space and freedom. Learning the Alexander Technique has been an incredibly insightful experience. Practising this technique has helped me to be more aware of my body, improve my posture and made me feel more relaxed in myself. I would highly recommend the Technique to everyone, especially to those suffering with back and joint pains, sporting injuries, bad posture and post-surgical recovery.
