These powerful narratives span the breadth of the war, from its earliest days to the chaos of battlefields, from rescue missions to the evolution of wartime technology, and from the quiet endurance of the home front to acts of resistance, liberation and remembrance. Review :

‘As a career naval officer for over four decades, I have known war throughout my long career. This extraordinary work of photographic literature perfectly illuminates the tragedy and triumph of combat. It illuminates the faces of men and women confronted with their own mortality, fear, and heroism. Above all, the book captures - image by beautifully reconstructed image - the sweep of history in the Second World War. An astonishing work of art.’

‘One of the most important collections of World War II photographs to be found in a generation. Deleuran has restored over 150 previously lost photographs and, in so doing, tells a powerful story. These evocative images leave a lasting impression...’

‘Stunning...an enthralling work. This captivating book urges us, as the author intended, to never forget the terrible cost of the war.’

‘The results are incredible...astonishing.’

‘Deleuran's discovery, talent for storytelling and obsession with history have given us these intensely real photographs - here for us all, for as long as civilisation lasts.’

‘These are stories that have not been told in the 80 years they have only existed as negatives.’
