About the Book

El propósito de este libro es ofrecer al lector una colección de trabajos centrados en el estudio de las emociones en el Mundo Antiguo. La ausencia de una obra parangonable a la nuestra y el relativo vacío en la historiografía de habla castellana justifican el interés de esta publicación, que aborda la percepción de las emociones desde diversas perspectivas y a través de un enfoque interdisciplinar. Así, lo que se pretende es explorar el complejo entramado de estados emocionales (la felicidad, el miedo, la ira, el amor…) a partir de las aportaciones procedentes, principalmente, de la Historia Antigua, la Filología Clásica y la Arqueología. Cada uno de los trabajos se focaliza en el estudio de una emoción concreta, en un lugar y en un período determinado de la Antigüedad, desde la antigua Grecia hasta la Roma imperial, pasando por Egipto y Oriente Próximo. Sin embargo, no debemos perder de vista un hecho fundamental: y es que la historia de las emociones —en cuyo seno se incardina esta monografía— no persigue como tal el estudio de una emoción en particular, sino la forma en que estas eran experimentadas por la sociedad. O, dicho de otro modo, qué factores llevaban a experimentar determinados estados emocionales y qué efectos producían en el individuo y la comunidad. Solo de este modo seremos capaces de distinguir entre la emoción propiamente dicha y su representación en los diferentes procesos históricos.
