Batisseurs de megalithes vise a mettre au point et tester une nouvelle methodologie pour comprendre le phenomene megalithique europeen du 5e au 3e millenaire av. J.-C. L'ouest de la France s'est avere etre un excellent terrain pour l'adaptation et l'application d'une methodologie jusque-la reservee aux periodes historiques: l'archeologie du bati. Cet ouvrage entend donc demontrer sa valeur lorsqu'elle est mise en oeuvre pour la Prehistoire, et notamment pour des edifices majeurs tels que le tumulus C de Pere a Prisse-la-Charriere (Deux-Sevres) et le cairn de Barnenez a Plouezoc'h (Finistere). Une recherche historiographique approfondie a mis en lumiere la grande disparite des connaissances relatives aux sites megalithiques. Les donnees technologiques, liees au chantier de construction, sont quasi inexistantes contrairement a celles architecturales, tant morphologiques qu'ornementales. En outre, les recherches se sont essentiellement portees sur les monolithes (orthostates et tables de couverture) au detriment des maconneries en pierre seche. Pourtant, l'etude des elevations antiques ou medievales a prouve qu'il etait possible d'obtenir des informations primordiales pour la comprehension de l'architecture, notamment par le biais de l'archeologie du bati. L'application de cette methodologie aux architectures megalithiques a necessite des adaptations. Le vocabulaire et les principes de la construction ont ete mis en coherence avec la maconnerie en pierre seche generalement utilisee sur les sites prehistoriques. De plus, l'etude des monolithes, qui ont une place majeure, a ete incluse. Les resultats obtenus mettent en evidence la biographie architecturale des tumulus neolithiques et les technologies employees pour leur construction. Ils montrent egalement que les sites megalithiques de l'ouest de la France ont fait l'objet d'amenagements architecturaux tout au long du Neolithique, revelant par extension le reel savoir-faire des batisseurs. Cet ouvrage atteste du potentiel de l'archeologie du bati megalithique, qui est une methodologie d'avenir pour la comprehension de la monumentalite durant la Prehistoire recente.

About the Author :
Florian Cousseau is an archaeologist whose research focuses on the megalithism of Western Europe. His PhD dissertation, carried out in western France, received international attention, winning the dissertation prize of the UISPP. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher and leads a major European excavation on the cairn of Goasseac'h in Brittany, France.
