About the Book

One of the greatest bands of all time and one of the greatest music photographers in history meet in this incredible visual archive featuring exclusive never-before-seen photos. Jim Marshall took thousands of photos of the Grateful Dead throughout their career—from Woodstock to the last free concert on Haight Street and beyond. Marshall’s magnificent images chronicle the band’s trajectory as hairstyles changed, relationships came and went, and the music evolved into the sound that would become beloved by generations to come. Marshall’s instinctive eye matched the Dead’s improvisational style, and he was welcomed into its family as he immersed himself in San Francisco’s counterculture scene throughout the 1960s and ’70s. He documented casual domestic scenes and transcendent concerts alike, offering a nuanced and intimate portrait of the band. The striking images in this book—a third of which have never been published—are printed in the rich, high-contrast tones that Marshall favored. They include glimpses of remarkable moments like the Newport Pop Festival, Woodstock, and the Human Be-In.  Quotes from contemporaries, collaborators, and members of the wider Dead community bring the images alive, while longer essays contextualize this photographic archive.  Whether you were there from the beginning or wish you had been, this is your chance to see a glorious era of music history as you’ve never seen it before, through the eyes of a visionary artist.

About the Author :
Jim Marshall, who died in 2010 at age 74, is widely celebrated as a premier music photographer and pioneer of the genre. His portfolio includes photos of virtually every major musician of his era, not only the icons of rock 'n' roll but also giants of jazz, blues, and country. Annie Leibowitz called him "THE rock 'n' roll photographer." Marshall was a legend not only for his outsize personality but also for the way he seemed to disappear when behind his trademark Leica camera, thereby producing some of the most intimate and iconic images in music history. John Mayer is a GRAMMY® Award-winning artist and songwriter. Since 2015, he has toured with Dead & Company on lead guitar and vocals.   David Gans is a California-born musician, author, and radio host. He has published five books about the Grateful Dead and produced boxed sets, compilations, and tribute albums for the band. Gans lives in Oakland, California. Amelia Davis is the owner and manager of Jim Marshall Photography LLC. She lives in San Francisco.

Review :
“In a career immersed in rock roll photography, the late Jim Marshall was long associated with certain iconic images. But Marshall’s ongoing documentation of the Grateful Dead embodied a unique bond between photographer and subject. Marshall snapped the band members backstage, onstage, at home, relaxing with their partners, and hanging out with fellow musicians” —Rolling Stone  "Jim Marshall was a singular artist who was no different from the rock stars he immortalized. I’ll never forget his unlikely swagger, his distaste for the bullshit, and his love for honesty and straight shooting." —John Mayer "Intimate and honest, like the viewer is right there with the band—a frozen moment in time." —CNN "A gift to Deadheads." ―amNY
