Jack London s'est immergé dans l'East End de Londres pendant plusieurs mois, au tout début du XXe siècle, logeant dans des asiles pour pauvres, ou parfois même dormant dans la rue, pour s'imprégner de la vie difficile de la population londonienne. Il a ainsi été à même de rendre compte de cette vie aux dures conditions, une vie précaire pour beaucoup, qui poussera l'auteur jusqu'à remettre en cause notre "modèle" de civilisation. Le bien-être dont peut jouir l'individu est le produit du travail de l'homme. Puisque la civilisation ne peut pas donner à l'Anglais moyen la nourriture et le toit que la nature donne à l'Innuit, une question vient immédiatement aux lèvres: La civilisation a-t-elle augmenté le pouvoir de production de l'homme moyen ? Si ce n'est pas le cas, alors la Civilisation doit disparaître. Mais, me rétorquera-t-on, la Civilisation a augmenté ce pouvoir de production de l'homme, puisque cinq boulangers peuvent fournir du pain à un millier d'individus, et qu'un seul homme peut produire des vêtements de coton pour 250 personnes, des vêtements en laine pour 300, et des bottes et des chaussures pour 1 000 personnes. Je viens de démontrer, tout au long de ce livre, que le peuple anglais, par millions, ne reçoit pas assez de nourriture, ni de vêtements, ni de chaussures. Cela nous amène à poser une troisième et inévitable question: Si la Civilisation a augmenté le pouvoir de production de l'individu moyen, pourquoi n'a-t-elle pas amélioré le sort de cet individu ? À cette question, une seule réponse est possible: à cause d'une mauvaise gestion. La Civilisation a rendu possible toutes les formes du confort matériel, et beaucoup de joies intellectuelles. Mais l'Anglais moyen est exclu de toutes ces joies. S'il doit éternellement en être privé, je dis que la Civilisation a failli à sa mission. Il n'y a aucune raison pour qu'on laisse continuer un artifice qui s'est révélé être un échec. Mais il est incroyable que les hommes aient mis inutilement sur pied ce formidable artifice, cela dépasse l'imagination. Reconnaître une défaite aussi cuisante, c'est donner le coup de grâce à l'effort et au progrès.
