About the Book

The power of gratitude has been tragically underestimated. Cynicism might seem to be a more reasonable response to all that is wrong with the world. However, what many do not realise is that by refusing to look for the good in others, or even in themselves, they are missing out on the chance to be a potent force for change. In The Gratitude Way, Girma Bishaw explores the transformative power of gratitude in personal and social situations, illustrated by his own real-life experience as an Ethiopian refugee making a life in the UK. Drawing on his experience as a Christian, and the wisdom of the Bible, Girma explains how understanding, cultivating and applying gratitude can be a catalyst in bringing divided groups together in greater harmony. His message of hope in the face of so much recent angst around community relations has proved inspirational to churches, community leaders and even royalty.

About the Author :
Girma Bishaw serves as the director of the Gratitude Initiative and Co-director at The London Project, both in the UK. His particular focus is on serving churches in the margins, to embark on a journey to embrace the wider mission in collaboration with the host churches. Girma has served as a church pastor and contributed in planting multiple diaspora churches across London and the rest of the UK. He is married to Yodit, and together they have a son and a daughter.

Review :
"... Prepare to be captivated, not only by Girma's story and research, but by gratitude itself as you never considered it... until now." "Many of us think we understand gratitude, but Girma's book blows our previous understandings out of the water. He powerfully and prophetically articulates why gratitude is the essential posture for thriving communities today. Drawing from a depth of reflection, research and lived experience, he powerfully presents gratitude as the best framework for reconciliation and community cohesion." "Girma is my friend and as I've walked with him in good and hard times, I can say without exaggeration that Girma is one of the most beautiful souls I've ever known. That's because he embodies what this book is about: gratitude as a way of life. By blending together his personal story, biblical reflection and pastoral application, Girma has given us all a much-needed primer on why and how we can become people whose lives are marked by gratitude. Read, enjoy and watch God fill you with gratitude!" "This timely book is a precious gift, containing riches for the common good; an inspired, refreshing counter-narrative, blending theoretical discourse, intimate story-telling and humour to draw us into an expansive embrace of gratitude and harvest benefits for ourselves and release positive change in the world around us." "Girma is a winsome and convincing advocate for gratitude's power to transform people, relationships and society. What a difference it would make if we embraced his counter-cultural message to lead change through gratitude with truth and grace" "Girma Bishaw's The Gratitude Way reveals how the power of developing the spirit of gratitude in our lives is transforming not only for us as individuals but for the societies in which we live." "Girma Bishaw makes a radical proposal that has the potential to make the world a better place for us all. Gratitude is the balm that heals our world and the oil that transforms our societies. His message is clear, his tone is persuasive, and his stories are engaging. We ought not only to thank God for the gift of one another. We must be grateful for us all - we can only be fully human when we are in communion with others who are different from us." "Those who spend any time with Girma will know that he himself is a gift from God, and that when it comes to gratitude he certainly practises what he preaches. This exploration of and apologetic for gratitude, from many angles and from multiple voices, will I hope stimulate both discussion and change, both personally and societally. I'm thankful for The Gratitude Way and recommend it." "In my experience, it is rare to find a book that not only has obvious academic depth, engaging with a wide range of literature from philosophical, to sociological, psychological and theological, but which is also well applied and moving. With the mixture of personal anecdotes, stories, insights and your cross-cultural perspective, the book manages to provide all that and more. It warmed my heart and has strengthened my commitment to "give thanks in all circumstances." "Revd Dr Girma Bishaw, in this ground-breaking book, The Gratitude Way, is providing a new framework for diverse societies to speak to one another and to bridge longstanding divides. In a polarised world, we need gratitude - acknowledgement of the good - more than ever. It is an important starting place, rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, that will bring us closer to Him and each other." "We can't always change the circumstances and challenges in front of us, but we can choose our posture and response. In this great book, Girma outlines what a response born out of gratitude truly looks like and how this counter-cultural approach can profoundly impact our places, situations and relationships. I am so grateful for this significant book at this important time."
