Le terme marivaudage, qui évoque encore aujourd’hui un excès de langage et une virtuosité superficielle, limite la portée d’un œuvre dont l’ambition était de créer un langage nouveau et naturel. Marivaux a dérangé ses contemporains par son style et il continue à le faire. C’est ce style en dialectique avec un concept qui lui a été très tôt apposé qui fait l’objet du présent travail collectif. Cet ouvrage retrace les vicissitudes d’un terme, en faisant l’examen critique à la fois des diverses définitions auxquelles il a donné lieu et de la réaction initiale de l’auteur lui-même. Au-delà du stéréotype ordinairement associé au théâtre, l’œuvre de Marivaux est considéré dans sa totalité et dans ses prolongements modernes, au cinéma par exemple. Les auteurs élargissent les perspectives ouvertes par ce terme, et reconsidèrent les enjeux esthétiques, éthiques et politiques qu’il a suscités depuis le XVIIIe siècle. Le marivaudage gagne à être conçu comme un phénomène autant social que littéraire. Au-delà de la notion de préciosité, les auteurs montrent que le marivaudage dépasse le cadre étroit des approches réductrices auxquelles il est le plus souvent associé. Leurs analyses innovatrices mettent en lumière la grande pertinence de l’œuvre de Marivaux pour comprendre notre modernité.
