Michelle Paver was born in central Africa but came to England as a child. After gaining a degree in Biochemistry at Oxford University, she was a partner at a City law firm, until she gave that up to write full time. This book is so skilfully researched and written (Paver does for the Stone Age what Hilary Mantel does for the Tudors)'
It keeps a fast pace, making it a real page turner. Descriptions of the icy landscape, crackling with demon-infested volcanoes, all add to the tension. Characters quickly feel familiar, even for readers new to the series, and the interpretation of events through Wolf's eyes makes it thoroughly enjoyable. Author Michelle Paver does an excellent job of making this a standalone read
Paver knows a narrative hook when she writes one: "Renn wouldn't do that. She wouldn't leave him without a word." Pause. "But she had." She knows, too, how to combine convincing details ("bowstrings of braided deer sinew"), vivid atmospherics ("the endless soughing of the sea") and supernatural dramatics (a sea goddess). A fine comeback
