About the Book

"In an era dominated by traditionalism on one hand and the emergence of modernity on the other, Lutyens’ work serves as a compelling testament to the brilliance of harmonizing these contrasting approaches." — ArchEyes Edwin Lutyens was one of the most famous architects of the 20th century. After he died in 1944, three large volumes of his drawings and photographs were commissioned and published by Country Life as a tribute. All three volumes are in the process of being reissued. Having earned his reputation designing domestic buildings, he was soon given scope to expand his practice to the outdoors and to public projects. This second volume contains his extensive contributions to garden design and town planning, as well as the finest examples of his bridges and a selection of monumental civic constructions. These include various university buildings, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Washington Embassy and the Viceroy’s Palace in New Delhi. The genius of Lutyens is now universally recognised. In the work featured in this book, we can now see not just the professionalism of a great architect, but also the loving care with which he set down the most minute detail, with the result that this is one of the few books in existence that can be used to provide working drawings. Also available: The Architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens: Volume 1, Country Houses ISBN 9781788842181.

Review :
"In an era dominated by traditionalism on one hand and the emergence of modernity on the other, Lutyens’ work serves as a compelling testament to the brilliance of harmonizing these contrasting approaches." - ArchEyes "New York’s Museum of Modern Art even went so far as to assemble an exhibition of Lutyens’s work in 1978, and London’s Hayward Gallery followed suit three years later. ACC’s first reprint of the series proved timely." - Architectural Record "Few architects have been as lavishly published as Edwin Lutyens. Despite the essentially nostalgic nature of his buildings, Lutyens was a very modern architect when it came to marketing, a canny self-publicist acutely aware of the power of books and magazines in establishing his reputation." - Building Design "Now, through a collaboration between the ICAA and ACC Art Books, the Lutyens Memorial Volumes are newly available to an audience that’s eagerly awaited their return. With a trove of detailed drawings, photographs, and essays by Arthur Stanley George Butler and Lutyens biographer Christopher Hussey, the books—one chronicling Lutyen’s country houses; another his gardens and renowned projects like the Viceroy’s Palace in New Delhi; and the third, released this spring, on his public buildings and designs for Liverpool Cathedral—are faithful recreations of their originals, offering a window into their namesake’s genius." - Traditional Building Magazine “Before the first edition was released in 2023, ICAA and ACC Art Books embarked on years of meticulous effort. Country Life provided high-resolution scans of their original glass plate images and the ICAA and ACC combed through these to match them with the images in the Memorial Series.” - Traditional Building Magazine “Now, with the Lutyens Memorial Volumes available once again, Lutyens admirers and new students alike have direct access to understanding the nuances of his approach.” - Traditional Building Magazine
