Review :
Diane Elson has been and is one of the most important voices in demonstrating male bias in economic thinking and policy making. This collection brings together some of her most important, and provocative, essays, and will be warmly welcomed. Diane Elson, one of the most insightful economists of our time, has been a pioneer of the feminist economics critique of standard economic models, which ignore social relations of power, in particular gender, in the economy. Her work, on feminist macroeconomics and economic development, which is covered in this volume, shows why economic policies based on models that ignore these power relations, have had such poor outcomes. This foundational work on feminist political economy and development highlights the centrality of gender inequalities in today’s world and how to address these in sustainable, equitable and caring ways. It is a must-read for all who wish to understand the gendered nature of macroeconomics and its effects. Diane Elson's book is a masterclass in feminist economics, illuminating the path to a more equitable future. Her groundbreaking research has transformed our understanding of gender and macroeconomics, inspiring a new generation of scholars and policymakers. With clarity, deep knowledge, and an even deeper commitment to gender equality, Diane Elson offers an invaluable rethinking of development and macroeconomic theory and policy. This collection constitutes an important historical document of her contributions as a visionary feminist economist. As one of the leading lights of feminist economics, Diane Elson’s work has reframed the economics discipline, challenging its gender-blind assumptions and laying the intellectual groundwork for a generation of scholars and practitioners. This book brings together a lifetime of her extraordinary scholarship, from the foundational concepts she pioneered to the gender-aware and policy-relevant economic frameworks that continue to shape the field. This is not just a book to read – it’s a book to think with. Diane Elson’s pathbreaking contributions have set the research agenda in feminist macroeconomics over the past three decades, and this collection is an essential resource for feminist scholars and economists alike. Elson’s Introduction provides a superb synthesis of her work, while offering concise insights on new policy initiatives and both established and emerging scholarship. Diane Elson is a personal hero. Early on, her writing helped me understand the ‘structural adjustment’ that I was studying and living through, and her analysis of the gendered cost of crises continues to influence my own approach. Her 3R (recognize, reduce, redistribute) framework for unpaid care work, then extended by the ILO to the 5R (adding rewarding and representation of care workers) has been foundational.
